Default replacement rear speaker?

I think my rear deck speaker (subwoofer? lol) is blown. Over the years has anybody discovered a decent upgrade that fits right in? My car audio tastes aren't that developed so anything should please me.

Also what fits in there, any 6x9 speaker?

Thanks for any tips and advice.

I remembered this thread from recent weeks. Try it first and see if it helps out.

AS seen in the other thread, it's a custom Alpine 6x9 dual voice coil subwoofer... difficult to find a replacement. However, if you have a bit of mechanical ability, you can rebuild it (the soft rubber surround is almost always what fails) for about $10 with a new surround kit from:

Took me about an hour and has worked perfectly for over a year now. I'd done it with several other speakers also, all with perfect results.

My 1995 VDP had the HKardon upgrade -- when the rear speaker failed -- the cone surround dried out and separated. The speaker still worked - it just sounded horrible. I remember it was a pain to take every thing out to get to the speaker. The fix with one of those cone repair kits was very easy. If you have the skill to get to the speaker you have the skill to fix the speaker.

The duel cone was a speciality item that no one I contacted was able to order -- short of the dealer.

I would make sure you hear something coming from the speaker - that way you know that the coil is still intact. Then - I would make sure to have the repair kit before I started.

Much thanks! I guess I'll try to find one from the junkyard. Though the idea of removing 90% of the car just to get to a lowly speaker isn't too exciting!

For $400 you can get a whole new set of aftermarket speakers deleting that ridiculous subpar subwoofer in the rear.

Take my advice and just do that.

And what is the 'ridiculous' subwoofer replaced with?

The original speaker is still available new from a couple of Jag spare parts suppliers, I recently bought one for mine.
And I don't find it at all ridiculous, I think it is well suited to the system in the car.

Agreed... as stated earlier, I repaired mine and am perfectly happy with the results. Of course, I'm not the type to cruise down the street with all windows open, inflicting my booming bass on all comers.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. It's probably worth the $10 risk to just repair it.
