Default Replacement Water Pump? OEM only or aftermarket ok?

Since I'm in the middle of reinstalling the heads on my XJR and since I've already got the coolant drained and most of it apart, I thought I might be a good idea to take the precautionary step of chaining the water pump. I did some searching and found a bunch of water pumps that were all dramatically cheaper than an OEM replacement, I was wondering if anyone has used and of these, and which aftermarket brands were ok and which were crap.

Comes with metal gasket, and the mating face is of good quality too.

I just installed a new one in my XJ8 from Rock Auto. Price was good, quality seems good. I've been shopping Rock for several years for a number of different vehicles (American, Japanese, and European) and never had quality issues. I always choose either their "daily driver" parts or the premium option if it's available.

I first switched to an Airtex: it leaked. Bought an AC Delco from my neighborhood Advanced Auto: worked great; much better quality.

If you are doing preventative maintence then replaced the palstic heater pipe back of engine and both upper and lower outlet pipes under sc that are now molded 1 piece without seems. You also need the stub pipe and another o ring from the oil cooler to back of the water pump

Plastic pipes under the sc are 2 pieces molded together that are leak prone at the seams. Go figure. The updated ones are 1 piece no seams

I've already ordered a bunch of new hose, including the two under the SC, which are also one piece hoses. The reason the heads needed to be rebuilt in the first place was because it dropped valves due to and overheat caused by a coolant leak. I never actually found the source of the leak so I'm replacing those SC hoses and the "octopus hose" behind the engine too, and some other ones two but I'm not sure what they are called. Which one is this plastic heater pipe, and the stub pipe?

bitten by the i read all forums responce again
since you dont mention your car in signature or thread and i didnt notice 1997-2003 catagory.....i can read a question and then assume without fully knowing where im at. Maybe early dimentia i had just responded to other questions about the 5.0 and cooling system issues. So when you upgrade to a newer jaguar with a 5.0 then my comments will be relevant. Until then........

Berkshire Jags in the UK sell OEM for about $55 plus the expansion tank you will need - they have gone direct to manufacturer. Give them a ring and they will advise you and save you a load of money
