Default Replacement Wheel Trim

I've lost a wheel trim, and considering how difficult they are to lever off I'm guessing it's been stolen. I bet some spotty faced kid has it adorning his bedroom wall by now. He's no idea of the problem he's caused me.

When I bought my '99 XJR X308 about 8 years ago I swapped it's wheels for the ones on my old XJ40 because they look way more stylish and enhance the XJR (just my opinion). Trouble is, those wheels are around 35 years old now and I can't begin to imagine where I could get a replacement trim. I don't suppose those wheels are still being produced.

I've searched the internet but can't see any wheels that look even vaguely like mine. But then I'm not very IT savvy, not very savvy with anything these days, being way past my use-by date. So if anyone can suggest a course of action, where to enquire, what to look for.. or better yet, does anyone happen to know if any of those lattice type wheel trims still exist in this century? I'd be most grateful for any guidance you guys can offer. If I have to buy a set of four trims I can live with that, better that than having to buy four new wheels. It doesn't matter about the center disc, I had mine custom made by some company in Europe (might even have been in Russia or Ukraine!), so I expect they can be replaced.

I live in South Australia, but I don't mind ordering from overseas if that's what it takes. Cheers, Dave.

Gimlet, that center trim looks like an adhesive holds that emblem in place. For those of us that live in the USA, keep in mind the XJ40 was from 88’-94’. That’s roughly 30 years ago. Only thing in life that’s 100% guaranteed is death and taxes. I believe what happened to yours is that the adhesive lost it’s stickiness and fell off. I’m not a youngster by any means but, keep in mind that nothing lasts forever in this world.

Thanks Vincent, I've done as you suggested, sent them a message via their website.
Cheers, Dave.

Thanks Addicted2boost, but I've never had a problem with the center discs. I had the stickers made to order by a company in Europe (maybe even Russia or Ukraine, I forget now). It's the whole trim that's gone astray, the part we used to call a hub cap, the part you have to remove to get to the wheel nuts. I so hate going around with my nuts exposed, don't you?

Cheers, Dave.

Hmm.. I've just been looking at another related post and I now realise "wheel trim" means something entirely different. What I'm missing from my wheel is the hub cap.

Hi Dave,

Those wheels are stunning! - I can see why you like them!

I believe those wheels were made by BBS for Jaguar, and I think they were also fitted to some other brands; BMW and Aston Martin come to mind.

So I had a look and it appears the caps are available, I even found these cheap replicas on Ebay which look pretty similar for less than $30 AUS:

Fits BBS 17" Sport Rims Wheel Center Hub Cap 30924038 ABS Plastic Silver | eBay

It is obviously a gamble as to whether they really are the same, but if nothing else they may look better while you find the exact part. If there is a part number on the reverse of your other ones, that might also help us find a replacement.

If that’s the scenario with the center cap, then I know Toyota back in the mid 90’s Camry had those optional with the BBS wheels.

Here's how Jaguar describe the parts. It's an example as your wheel doesn't appear in JEPC:

A Road Wheel Trim covers the entire wheel diameter and usually goes on a steel wheel. A Hub Cap is the removable centre on your wheel (arrowed in blue) and the badge with the Jaguar script is a Road Wheel Badge although most members on our forums, regardless of location, call them Centre Caps.

That's a great looking wheel.

Graham

Very thorough Graham!

I'm hopeful we can get Dave's Jag looking ship shape for not too much money now.

Wow, that's fantastc, thanks a million Chris and Graham. So it's definitely the hub cap including the badge/centre cap that have gone missing. And I've just prized one off another wheel and low and behold - it seems to be made of ABS! The part number is C-679, and my tyres are embossed with "215/55 R17" so I guess that would mean they're 17 inch wheels, is that right?

I'll certainly buy one of those on ebay (thanks again Chris), and see how it compares with the ones I have.

I sent an inquiry to the the SB Wheels Store in the UK as suggested by Vincent, but their site didn't have a facility to include photos. They've emailed me asking for photos so I'll send them some and see what they have to offer. If they can produce centre cap stickers too that would be a real bonus!

I'm indebted to you guys. I'll let you know how it all turns out.

Cheers, Dave.

Happy to help Dave - usually my posts are utter nonsense, and it's not often I am actually useful!

Out of interest I looked up "C-679" and nothing seems to come up, so if they did use that as the part number they have sadly not published it anywhere.

I can spot one tiny difference between your ones, and the Ebay ones. The Ebay ones seem to have the "notch" around the edge missing, the one you would use to pry away and remove the trim. I could be wrong as the photos are not the best on the site.

Thanks again Chris. I got a reply from that UK company telling me my wheels "may be BBS" but they're not genuine Jaguar parts, and therefore they can't help me! Well, that's put me in my place! I guess they could have been sourced by the original owner of the XJ40, maybe.

So I'm hoping the hub cap I ordered from ebay will do the job. I hadn't noticed the lack of a notch, but I see that now. I guess I can create one with a file. There is one other slight difference that concerns me a bit; The 'clip length' (assuming they mean how much the clip stands out from the back of the item), is a few millimeters shorter on mine than in their description. I'm hoping that won't be a problem.

Interestingly, all those similar items offered on ebay have the same description, even down to the 'Color: sliver', so I guess there's just the one Chinese company producing that item.

Duh.. it's only just occurred to me that the obvious place I should be making inquiries about this is with BBS themselves! So that's my next job. Wish me luck.

Cheers, Dave.

Thats a shame those hubs like a bit different. Let's hope they still look OK.

I believe BBS wheels were fitted to the Chaseur Stealth Jags, not sure if they went on any other models. But as you say BBS might be the best place for something authentic.

Best of luck sir.

Hi guys, just a follow up on replacing my hub cap. I finally received the (presumably) Chinese one I ordered on ebay - and it's great! It seems as good as the 3 originals I still have, it's made of the same material, and does in fact have a notch for removal. I'm so pleased with it I've ordered two more, in case I lose any more in the future.

Thanks again for all your helpful suggestions folks.
