Get two picks. Put them on each end, and push down. That will open the clip up. Once you do that, pull back on it.

The two outer straps need to be pushed outward from the center. If you don't have the special tool, use a pair of needle nose pliers, insert them between the straps and body, spread the pliers apart to push the straps out and work the fitting off.

These connectors can be a PITA, and with age can be brittle and break easily.

Jaguar did make a special tool........or you can create a home-made device out of thick gauge electrical wire.......or use two small screwdrivers, or needlenose pliers as avern suggests, or some picks as Z07 suggests.

An alternate method is to compress the connector with some channel locks which also distorts the connector whereby it will release.

Just noticed you are from the UK, so channel locks would be gland pliers in your parlance.

Maybe a hundred threads on this question: needle noses are what I used, but you can also squeeze 90 degrees off and get them to open. Key phrase, they are FRAGILE. Best to see if you can find the special tool or go buy new hoses -- Rock Auto, dealer, bunches of places, try Amazon. Bob Goff noted once that he might have a hundred of the special tool in his tool box . . . I broke mine once, replaced it; my Land Rover dealer moved to a Jaguar dealer and offered a free oil change and check up, jumping on that, I took the car over to the dealer (Checkered Flag): when I get it back, it note that the hose from the tank to the radiator is brand new -- still had sticker hanging on it. The other key: when you re-install these hoses make sure they cross over . . . .

Thanks for everyone's help - I managed to get the old hose off using two small flat screwdrivers. But would not have known how to undo the connection if I did not get the responses to my question.
