Default Replacing rear view mirror

Has anyone had experience with replacing the rear view mirror with a Gentex auto-dimming mirror?

What year / model do you have? I thought all of them are auto dimming? Why would you want the gentex mirror?

I just did this. I replaced the factory mirror since some kind of finish had discolored and come off the center of the mirror causing distortion near the edges. This was a known defect and caused factory recall, however, calling the company still servicing this required I send the old one in and they refurbish it and send it back, for around $75. The Gentex mirror only cost $125, and it added the LCD compass.

Only problem was the ambient light sensor was built into the mirror as well. I didn't know this beforehand, but was able to jumper two wires from the loom so the lights always turn on when you rotate the switch to "auto".

All in all I'm happy, although it took four tries to get the new metal universal mirror mount to stick to the windshield. Does anyone know of a windshield-bond that works on the first try?

I've done it with 2 part epoxies. The epoxy is not UV stable so use it only if the area is blacked out. Otherwise urethane might be a better choice. Even better, if you have the dispensing tool use Loctite Hysol. The window will delaminate before the glue bond fails.

I usually hold the mount in place with some tape while the adhesive sets up.
