Default Replacing shifter J gate trim.

Somehow my spouse has broken this piece of plastic that fits on the J gate. I have not gone to the local area Jaguar dealer yet to order one. Last visit I paid more for one Jag emblem wheel insert then I did for four through Welch Enterprises. I don't see that interior piece offered anywhere yet. Any suggestions?

The Cover (item 9 or 10)?

Replacing shifter J gate trim.-x308-gearshift.jpg

Trim parts are generally the first to disappear from Jaguar inventory. If it is still available, prepare yourself for a similar $$ shock like the wheel emblem.

Sourcing used parts is the way to go with items like this. Note the different types depending on VIN and adaptive speed control.

Which piece of plastic are you talking about? If you look at this photo, you'll see where mine is cracked. I've seen a number of XJs with this same "flaw," so I wonder if it's just a weak link.

I have never taken the j-gate apart (I have taken the surround off to access the radio, but I've never disassembled the j-gate itself) and I've never tried to find the part that's needed other than to ask forum members who are parting out similar cars. If you find a source for the part, please post the info, I'm sure others could use that plastic piece, too.

Take a look at this thread - https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...removal-79644/

You can skip the video and discussion about taking the j-gate surround off, but see posts #7-9.

The part you need is the part in this photo that has the lettering on it: (this is from post #9)

That's interesting. My J-gate surround was cracked like that too. I guess from the PO slamming the shifter down into Drive. I replaced it with one off FleaBay.

Mine has the same crack. I tried gluing it from the bottom end to not discolor the plastic but it snapped again a few days later. I have not decided if I want to replace it or just leave it as this seems to be a problem everyone has.

One of two things causes this.
As has already been mentioned...slamming the shifter down into 'D'
or, it can also be caused by very rough handling when removing the trim piexe to replace globes or whatever.
These are alway available from various Jaguar breakers and places like E-bay.

There was a post in the XK section discussing brushed aluminum replacements found on ebay. About $60?

Here is the weblink to the XK thread on brushed aluminum gear plate cover (look at posts 1 thru 3):

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...t-99678/page2/

Looks like the Ebay seller (gilbert3009) no longer is listing anything at this time (also appears to be in Canada)

Forum member GG put up photos from the original ebay listing.
I like the brushed aluminum look, but not how is installed with the tops of the 2 screws that hold it in place, also not how the shift numbers look.
It would have been better to have the same detailed design (as the original plastic) on the brushed aluminum.
