You've already posted an Intro in August ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...aytony-147870/ ) so I've moved your question to X308 forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Tony, I don't know who randy Wilson is, but he is talking out his ****!
There is NO way to turn the engine light off for 30k miles. The light is on because there is a fault, get the codes read, that will tell you what the problem is.
Otherwise you are just throwing parts/money at the car in the hope of getting lucky.

Yes and no. A 'code reader' has the additional function of turning off the CEL- but it doesn't fix the vehicle fault turned it on in the first place. Doing so will also erase the code number containing the information required to start troubleshooting.

Himd ,I found randy wilson on a jaguar forum site , he stated the black box is mounted in the boot on the forward bulkhead the button is brhind a guard its a vdo piece inline with speedo cable jaguar did not go all eloctronic route when they converted to the electronic speedo they made a interface that takes a signal from the pulse generator and drives a sleeper motor attached to this .my comment I do have a black box in my boot of the xj308 its called a fuse box ive looked inside the box but reluctant to pull any guards up till I see mechanic then I'll let you know if its thier regards tony

With a little digging, I found Randy Wilson and his procedure:
O2 Sensor Test Information & Resetting the Light
"Resetting the O2 Warning Light
Randy Wilson
First off, this reset has nothing to do with the O2 sensor itself. It is merely a maintenance "reminder" light, required by our dear government, telling you it's time to do the x0,000 mile service. It's driven by the speedo, and turns on a light on the dash after a cetain mileage has passed. In the case of Jag, the light says Ox sensor. Other brands had the light labeled "EGR" or "Service" or ...
The early cars with mechanical speedo had a Smiths unit in the middle of the speedo cable. It's a white box mounted in the engine bay at the bulkhead. This unit has an odometer looking counter that shows the percentage of mileage that has passed. It is reset by turning the recessed knob on the side until the counter shows 0000. The knob has two holes in it to turn it. Smiths makes (made?) a little key that fit. I have sucessfully reset them with a set of small circlip pliers, though this is a pain.
The later cars with electronic speedos use a different system. This is one of my favorite examples of British parts bin engineering. The box, as you mentioned is mounted in the boot on the forward bulkhead. This box is black, and has a push button to reset it. That's it. Push the white button (it is recessed behind a guard), and kerchunk, it's reset for another 30K miles. What makes this such a favorite of mine is the box. It's a VDO piece that, like the Smiths, is designed to go inline with the speedo cable. Jaguar, unlike most everyone else, did not go the all electronic route when they converted to the electronic speedo. They made a interface that takes the signal from the pulse generator, and drives a stepper motor attached to this mechanical counter.
Hey, it works... :>"

ALL XJ Series III sedans sold in the US with Cataverters and O2 sensors had the described box in the boot. Every 30K miles it set the O2 sensor light in the Inst Pack as a reminder to check/replace the sensor.
The white button reset the VDO made unit to zero and the counter would run another 30K miles until it set the indicator AGAIN.
The little square light on the dash said 'OXYGEN SENSOR' and one lady came into the shop with all her windows open. She was worried that there was not enough oxygen inside the car for her to breathe properly. We had a good laugh.
