RESTRICTED ENGINE LIGHT - Codes

I have a 2001 XJ8L, with 116K miles.
Been running literally perfect for the past 2 years. Just received a RESTRICTED ENGINE warning, after a morning start and about 2 minutes into the drive. The car was running very rough at the first stop light. Feels like it is missing pretty bad, but there has been only a couple of SAFE MODE warning in the past couple of months, but with no symptoms.
I turned back for home, tried various resets I know of and nothing worked.
I did put some lesser quality gas in yesterday, but drove 60 miles on it without noticing any problems.
I see many mentions of error codes - Is there a trick to get the readout under the speedo to give you these? Or, do those that have codes have the hookup to get those on the computer access at dealers?
Please let me know if anyone has a remedy besides the usual trip to service and high priced bill for diagnostics.
Thank you, glad I found this wonderful forum!!

Several autoparts stores (e.g.Pepboys, Autozone, et al.) will read the OBDII codes for you gratis; the proprietary Jaguar codes, however, are not accessed by OBDII readers, so if the free guys don't get you an answer, it's a dealer deal. Good luck!

Most codes that will set the light are OBD2 so most scanners will get the code, just wont get descrption of what it is.

Maybe someone can give me a logical explanation.

I don't currently have a problem or codes with my Jag. I was just wondering why Jaguar withholds repair information for their cars and why a person cannot buy a service manual from Jaguar or anywhere else for that matter.
I'm certainly not griping about what you bring to this forum, your help is very valuable to everyone that needs help with their Jaguar. As for me I personally do nearly all of the maintenance and repairs on my vehicles. That includes a 64 1/2 Mustang convertible, '85 and '87 El Caminos, a 2002 XJ8 and a 2000 Harley Road King. I just feel a little sorry for people that get raked over the coals price-wise for some very simple and easy repair work from Jaguar dealers.

Thanks for the reply and the offer FJT. I do have membership with Alldata and it is helpful but their illustrations are poor. And I still have not received an explanation of why Jaguar refuses to give consumers some repair information. Just what the heck is so proprietary about repair information? And what good is a ECM code if it will not tell you what it concerns?
While I am venting, I long for the days when Jaguars did not require something like 27+ relays and countless fuses located in several places to function. My first Jaguar was a 1957 model (Mark II?). That was in the 60s. Loved the car, hated that damn BW auto transmission. I was very young, but successfully did an overhaul on the engine and the SU carburetors with the aid of a SERVICE MANUAL.
