brought a 2001 xj8 with both engine light on and sometimes rp would kick in,but not everyday or when being driven.
took car to jag specialist who pinpointed coil number 5 was breaking down,cleared codes ,put new coil in and so far is all good,drives as smooth as is poss for a 12yr old car.

If you think you have a vacuum leak do a smoke test on the manifold first to identify the location of the problem. I recently R&R my manifold because of a crack but also found a hose that was improperly reinstalled by others. As for the real cause of your RP that will only appear when it wants to. FYI I had a bad knock sensor, throttle body problems and recently a vacuum leak along with another throttle body problem that did not throw a code for several attempts to capture one with my OBDII code reader installed. I should also note that the OBDII reader I use is a $29.95 reader I got from Costco nothing special.

I have been getting the Restricted Performance message lately -- here's my story....
First time I got the RP message was after driving 22 miles to work and parallel parking my car in front of the office. The drive is about 1/2 freeway and the rest city driving. While the car was still in reverse, I noticed the RP message come on. I would guess it happened while backing into the spot. Later that day I drove home and never got the RP message.
The second time was just like the first time, one day later. Same thing later that day, too.
The third time it came on was while driving to work on a city street, I was going about 35 mph at the time. No change in performance was noticed. Drove the rest of the way to work, about 10 miles with the message displayed.
The next time was the same day as the 3rd time - the RP message came on while driving about 30 mph on a city street, while slowly accelerating. I drove the car with the RP message displayed about 8 miles at freeway speed without any noticeable performance issues. I parked the car, ran into the building to conduct about 15 minutes worth of business and came out to check the codes with my Actron code reader -- P1111 only -- and no RP message.
The final time about 5 minutes later, still had the code reader attached, and I was again driving about 30-35 mph on a city street and accelerating slowly. I also just happened to hit the 'auto' button on the AC - I had turned off the AC in the parking lot when I 1st connected the code reader. I pulled off the road into a parking lot, turned the car off as well as the AC and started it up again -- no RP message. Drove 8 miles, no RP message, stopped at an ATM, turned car off, got back in about 2 minutes later, started it up, no RP message. Drove 1 mile, turned on AC, no RP message.
I checked my Actron code reader several times and the only code was P1111, and yes, I re-scanned each time.
Long post, I know, but I have to mention two more things -- 1st, I had a gas filling problem the other day when the pump handle didn't click off when full, so I had gas spill all over the car! I washed the car and hosed out the gas intake area with water. Stupid? Maybe.
2nd, I have no idea how to read my Actron code reader beyong getting the "codes." After it displays the codes it has a bunch of other info that I don't know how to interpret. If anyone is interested, I could tell you what it says and maybe you can tell me what my problem is!
Ok, I lied, I have one other thing -- in April, a mechanic took off the manifold cover and the injectors, to replace my thermostat and tower -- he said I needed seals but I argued with him until he reused the old ones. He did show me that I had a leak and the engine (according to his code reader) was running lean and misfiring, etc. I have put nearly 7k miles on the car since then and, in my opinion, it has not been running as smoothly as it did before he did that work. Just wanted to mention this!

A smoke test is a means of introducing smoke to the engine vacuum system to identify leaks. See the link below.

I need to stop at my mechanic's shop to see if he can read some codes and check on leaks, etc. But in the mean time, I did get the RP message today while in bumper to bumper traffic on the freeway. No degredation in performance, however.
I've also failed to mention that every time I get the RP message the cruise control doesn't work -- in fact you can't get the button on the console to activate (red light won't come on). Just wanted to mention that in case it rings a bell with anyone.

I ran across this thread https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...control-84113/ while looking for something else! I am wondering if maybe I need to look at the brake switch since my cruise control light and RP message seem to be the problem?
I'm wondering if the Failsafe and Restricted Performance messages are similar. Seems like a lot of the same issues. I have never seen a Failsafe message on my car.

I'm quite confused -- today the cruise control light turned off and I got the Failsafe Engine Mode message. I wonder if that's what I've been getting lately but "remembered" it being the RP message -- I know, pretty stupid of me, but all I can think of is that I did get an RP message and then later I started getting the Failsafe message. Anyhoo -- I have an appointment with my mechanic tomorrow to read the codes, if any. I'm still showing only P1111 on my little code reader. Hopefully he'll be able to get some better info for me so I can figure out what to do. The symptoms today with the Failsafe message were the same as I reported earlier in this thread. Can't tell you how stupid I feel right now, but I KNOW it was RP at least once, but now I'm thinking the rest of the time it was FS. Oh well, I'll figure this out sooner or later. Would love to get it figured out before the end of the month since I'm thinking about another trip to Wisconsin in October and would hate to drive up there with this lingering problem.

Gus -- thanks for the info, I agree that it is sounding like a bad brake switch. I've read a lot about it, including your wonderfully informative jagrepair.com write up and will probably tackle this thing soon! Can't say as I relish the thought of doing it, but it must be done!

Just shop around for the best price because they are all the same switches. I have been using Jagbits.com Another procedure to replace the switch is to drop a string or fishing line from one of the bolt holes tie it to the new switch and pull it up then fasten it properly and you are done…
I am not sure if your switch in like an XK8 but in either case you will have fun replacing it……

The rockauto link I posted above doesn't seem to work any more.

It looks like the "guts" of the one in the how-to photos for the XK8. Guess I need to get under the dash and see what I have -- does anyone have a how-to for the XJ8?

My Restricted Performance Experience
I recently purchased my 2002 XJ8 Sport with 150,000 km. Overall I'm quite pleased with my purchase. My first major road trip over a long weekend was 1500km and had no problems what so ever. Two weeks later over a weekend I was on another trip which was 300km one way. On my return trip home I started out and immediately I was getting the Restricted Performance readout. Initially I was quite concerned and had the passenger look up in the owners manual to see exactly what it meant. I was seeing the amber light next to the message and realized it could be a lot worse if the red light had appeared. I once exceeded 3500rpm and the engine immediately retarded and lost all power. I limped the car home at 100km and did not exceed 3000rpm the rest of the way home. I borrowed a diagnostic tool which gave me a P0333 code which turns out to be a bank 2 knock sensor. I checked out several locations including my local Jaguar dealership and no one had the part in stock. I was referred to an online site called Rock-Auto and placed my order for a single knock sensor. I had the part in less than a week at a cost of 115.00 which was less then all other places I checked on. The install went very well and used the instructions from a forum thread by jimlombardi called

I cleared the code and the engine light and It has not returned. I'm now at 157,000km and everything is smooth sailing, knock on wood. No pun intended.

I had the same kind of RS "loss of power" experience after I had a mechanic replace my thermostat tower -- apparently there was a vacuum leak. I had him re-seat everything and the leak went away and the RS issue disappeared.
My most recent RS issue might have been due to a loose clamp on the hose that goes from the throttle body to the air filter box -- I tightened it and the car runs better and no RS message.
