Default Retro fit parking sensors

Am thinking about fitting parking sensors to my 1999 XJR. I took it into a local auto electrican who did a good job on my other car. He basically tried to talk me out of having it done as he said the bumper was tricky to remove and if the bolts broke they were a £400 part from Jaguar!

Has anyone had experience of getting sensors fitted and if so can recommend an installer in the UK. Otherwise what about alternatives such as the Meta which fits onto the registration plate?

A slight exaggeration!

We don't have energy absorbing bumpers in the UK and these are a lot easier and cheaper to replace the fixings than on the US equivalent.

The rear bumper can be awkward to remove because the vertical fixing bolt (item 6 circled in red) seizes in the brass nut embedded in the plastic bumper beam (item 14).

Sometimes the only way to release this is breaking the mounting brackets (item 1).

The last mounting bracket I purchased from Jaguar about two years ago was £38. British Parts UK list them at under £39 each now.

The procedure for fitting the Jaguar style Parking Aid is detailed in this PDF:

JLM 21545 Reverse aid.pdf

Aftermarket equivalents are available at much lower cost and the fitting method is similar.

@GGG

Related but off-topic question, you said the UK bumper is non-energy-absorbing correct? So do you know if the UK version is any lighter than the US version? If it is, I may have to see about procuring some UK parts Anything to lighten this big ol kitty up a bit.

Thats all, I know a salvage yard that has a XJR with the reverse aid package. Would this work on 98 MY also, do I have those two connector?

I am on the same page with you, I am tin debate between whether to go for OEM retrofit or new aftermarket considering OEM was a technology over a decade ago.

I found there was hole-less sensor available now without drilling, but I wonder how does it perform?

The difference between the two assemblies lies in the mountings and the beam.

The US bumper is attached with a pair of substantial energy absorbing Struts (item 1) supporting the Bumper Beam (item 12) which I understand is made of aluminium:

The UK bumper is attached with a pair of solid composite (looks like glassfibre / resin) Mounting Brackets (item 1) supporting a plastic Bumper Beam (item 14) with brass screw inserts for the bolts (item 6):

The Bumper Cover and trims are the same on both assemblies.
