Rotary switch problems
Hi Guys, just changed the Rotary switch on my 2000 X308, i now cant get the car to engage a gear properly, if i go to select reverse the D light will light up on the J gate, the Neutral light manages to light up between drive and neutral, Park does not light up and gearbox goes into restricted mode, if i take the lever round to the manual settings it also goes into restricted mode and no lights are illuminating, i have even tried my original Rotary switch and i cant seem to get it right, seems like the car is very confused, ive tried hard reset and leaving battery disconnected. I originally had fault code PO706 Trans range sensor circuit range performance and the car was going into limp mode. I could really do with some pointers on this. One other question, will most X308 Rotary switches work or does it have to be the right serial number, i see people listing Rotary switches and saying for 1998-2003 etc. I really do love this car as its a long wheel base Sovereign in Black with Black leather and its in very nice clean condition, but my patience is wearing very thin, any advice would be great thank you

Hi Pete,
Some X308s were equipped with the Mercedes-Benz 5G-Tronic W5A580 transmission, but since your car is a Sovereign and presumably normally-aspirated, I believe your transmission is the ZF 5HP24. The rotary switch for the 1998-99 cars to VIN 878717 was part number LJA6201AC. The switch was revised at VIN F00035 (near the very end of the 1999 model year), to part number LJA6201AD. At that point the old switch part number superseded to the new part number, so presumably the switches are interchangeable. However, if your replacement switch is from a '98-'99 car there could be a possibility of incompatibility.
My first impression is that it is more likely that there is a problem with the control cable, or that there is a problem with something in the J-Gate. The fact that the problem continued when you reinstalled the old rotary switch might also point to the J-Gate. The possible causes of the P0706 code you had previously are:
1. Transmission Control Module / J-Gate Module CAN fault
2. J-Gate Module failure
It would be worth double-checking that the rotary switch is properly attached to the transmission with the shaft properly engaged, and that the cable is properly attached to the lever and the lever is secure. Also clean the electrical connector at the transmission - leaking oil can contaminate the connector.
If all seems correct at the transmission end, it would be worth checking the J-Gate for proper cable attachment. You could clean all the electrical connectors at the J-Gate and linear switch.
Another possibility is that if your cable has stretched, perhaps it needs to be adjusted. I think I recall that there is a provision for adjusting the cable at the transmission end, but I may be wrong.
Hopefully other members will be able to offer additional thoughts and info.
Cheers,
Don
