Default Rust on Ignition Coils & Maintenance at 100k

My very trust worthy mechanic tells me the ignition coils on the right side of the engine have some rust. Those suckers are not cheap. Does anyone know how to take the rust off without ruining them? Also, what maintenance do you guys recommend for a 2001 XJ8 with 100k miles? I have changed the oil and fuel filters; replaced the thermostat and serpentine belts and the spark plugs with Denso double tip plugs. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I've moved your post to the XJ8 section as the maintenance question in particular is model-specific.

Also removed you eMail address. You are welcome to put it back but it could result in you getting masses of spam from web crawlers.

Here's the Jaguar Maintenance schedule to 60k miles:

The sequence repeats after that so at 100k miles, the 40k service items should be covered.

Over and above scheduled maintenance, check the HOW TO section at the top of the threads here for advice and information on Tensioners and Transmission fluid changes.

light surface rust on coils isn't a problem - more aesthetic. They're soft iron so will rust if moisture is present. Maybe use some scotch pads to clear it off.

I'd suggest a trans service at that mileage, loads of info and how to's here - originally 'sealed for life' but fluid change along with the filter and pan gasket extends the life of these boxes, a known weak point is the A drum, and keeping the trans fluid in spec' helps.

+1. Surface rust on the colis is expected and will not harm anything. Much more important, your 2001 may have the old plastic secondary chain tensioners that should be upgraded. Failure of these will likely lead to engine damage.
