Saying Goodbye

Saying Goodbye
I crashed the XJR on Jan 5 and that was my last drive in her. The car sustained enough front and rear damage that my insurance company considered it a total loss. Funny how that happens, since I spent the prior weekend replacing burnt-out bulbs and filling it with premium gas. The repair guys were saying that the damage was not that bad. Just the parts were so damn expensive. Somebody will pick this thing up and not have much to do to get it right. Only had 78K miles.
It was a short affair, but one I learned a lot from. I really like the simplicity of the X308 compared to what the XJs turned into. And the brute power... what can I say?
This website has been exceptional in every way. The technical content, maturity, enthusiasm, etc. Well done, gents!
Not sure where I'm going. Might give Audi another try. Good luck everyone and take care.

i second that... if there isnt any frame damage , which it doesnt look like, most of those parts can be found at a wrecker and ebay! thats probably what the insurance co will do and then re-sell your girl at a profit. unless they gave you an above average check , i would consider the alternative. looks like a straight car otherwise
good luck

That's the point, boys. Be careful out there. The auto body quoted $9K worth of parts and labor.
And the check cut to me was $4K over what I bought it for 18 months ago.
The frame was bent in the rear collision. Back door was stuck and crease formed on fender above rear wheel.

A real shame....she doesn't even look too bad at all......
As said earlier, sorry to hear about your loss and wish you the best for your future motoring adventures.
It'd be really cool if you bought another Jag and great to see you back here...........Jag owner or not, you're always welcome here as a car enthusiast
Should you not buy your car back, a quick post here advising members where this baby is might mean someone else can get her back on the road or salvage what looks like some really good useable parts from her

I did $7600 damage to mine last December, I didn't even hear the possibility of totalling the car from AAA. You can probably, like the guys keep saying, buy the car back and rebuild the front for way less than the adjuster thought.
My bumper cover was $1300 used, and the fender way 700 used. I once bought one for $150+ shipping off Ebay. The body shops pay more from part servies than is necessary. So, if it's your money, (not insurance!) Buy the least expensive good parts you can find.
I really wish you luck though, I came close to being in your situation... and again, the damage looked minor. Although I scratched the radiator and put a dead spot in the steering. And I asked that they re-do all the wheels on the claim.

I would buy that car salvage in a heartbeat. I currently have everything needed to fix it parts wise on a parts car I paid 1700 for. Heck I could fix and paint your car then still sell off whats left on the parts car and probably break even. Yes its true, bumpers are written for 1300, fenders for 700 then every little nut bolt clip and screw makes it add up quick. I have bought a whole car before, non running, just because buying the parts separately is expensive.

I am sad. The car will be put in an auction. Maybe Coventry West will grab it. They're a huge dismantler here in Atlanta. I would never walk away from what the insurance company offered me for this car ($14.6K). If the car were really special like a pristine, low mile XJR100, I would consider it, but it was (only) a clean XJR-R1 with average miles -78K. I do regret having fresh rear tires and a full tank of premium gas in it!

sorry to hear the news, good luck with your next vehicle
I think it really just depends on the wood sets that they make at the factory, some are light, some are dark. on mine the dash and door wood is pretty dark, the steering wheel is dark, but the shift knob was really light wood, didn't like that look so I got an aftermarket shift knob with darker wood
Do the XJ8/XJRs use the same wood as the VDP? Mine seems to be lighter with a different pattern than most X308s I see. Mine has a more yellow stain whereas I usually see x308s with a brownish stained wood. Oddly my steering wheel and gear shifter are slightly darker than the rest of the wood. Its slightly lighter in real life than it looks in this picture.
