The fuel 'feed and return' lines indeed go into the bottom of the tank above the rear suspension. Sedans usually have enough room to access the lines but XK are a little 'tighter' and might require removing the front of the suspension 'cage' mounts to lower/tilt the cage enough for access.

Leave the rear mounts in place so it won't fall out on the floor. It will tilt enough.

MANY MANY posts about the tools/procedures in the forum of BOTH X308 and X100 sections. The XJ40 and X300 sedans are similar.

Guess I have to search a bit more -- most of the fuel tank threads are short on actual removal information. My local guy is a very good mechanic and has an online system -- but it's always best to point out any odd thing -- or trick to get the job done quicker or with less stress.

I had a bit of a shock when I went over to my local dealer yesterday -- the long time parts guy passed away. He helped me 30 years ago with my first SAAB and countless Jaguar. Was in his 50's

I'm leaving for the holiday -- so I figured the safest thing is to pick up the the OE parts from the dealer. Two pumps - 2 filters - top gasket and the inline filter. $488.00 ... the URO pump would have saved me a couple hundred. But my local guy has them and it should be done when I return.

Parts came Tuesday ... my shop finished it up on Wednesday morning. Took it out to the county place for the holiday ... 90 min drive .... all well. I stopped over to the shop when they got the tank out .. surprisingly clean and the fuel pump socks looked as if they could have been reused. Other then being slightly discolored they looked about the same as the new ones. Both pumps were dead -- but looked normal. While searching this problem I saw some pumps all rusty -- not the case with mine. Thankfully, the wires all looked normal and the connectors fit tightly into the new pumps.

Other then it costing $1100.00 .. Shop charged me 4.5 hours of labor (diagnostic time/ RR the full gas tank/ pumps .... also did an oil change/ tire rotation and I had a new set of trunk struts .. so that was lucky.

No noise from the pumps.

I usually charge 4 hours but I might add a little for full tank and diagnostics so that is a fair labor charge.

New gauze filters are a small price to pay for what it takes to replace the pumps. Fuel pump warranty would likely be voided without replacement.

Motorcarman -- you mentioned upwards of 4 hours in one of the threads ... So I was expecting a bit more.

My guy always replaces the socks (if equipped) and installs a new inline filter when he does a fuel pump -- said the same thing as you .. why risk .. and the pumps are expensive.

I want to thank you for your help ... Had it not been crazy time of year (holidays/ winter) .... I may have gone OEM aftermarket .... and knowing the OE was Denso ... I would have more then likely gone that route .. may not have been the best way to go with someone not familiar with the fitment.

At least i understood my options ... and potential pitfalls.
