Default seat memory does not store new settings

I've recently purchased a 1998 XJ8 L. I have noticed the driver seat memory will not store the new settings. Here's what I've experienced.

  • The memory recalls all the old stored settings for each of the buttons.
  • The red memory light comes on when pressing the memory button.
  • With the red light on and depress one of the memory buttons I hear a chirp and the red light goes out - which should indicate the setting has been stored - but it hasn't been.
  • All of the position buttons are working correctly, back/forward tilt up/tilt down and head rest up and down.
  • When removing the ignition key the steering wheel moves however the seat does not move for easy exit - I think the seat is supposed to move back, can someone confirm?
  • When inserting the ignition key the steering wheel moves to last know position. The seat does not move.
Not sure where the settings are stored, since I can recall all the previous stored settings it seems odd that it can't save a new setting. Could this be caused by the fact that it can't read the new position there for it has nothing to store?

When I had issues with the driver's seat not moving out of the way for easy exit, the solution was to swap the driver and passenger seat control modules: they're identical and are easy access under the seat.

There are hundreds (thousands?) of TSBs in the large file area of each model.
You will likely find answers to most of the questions/problems you have.

You can also do a forum search for similar issues.

Here is the diagnostic TSB for you.
