security locking module not working (2 buttons on fob key not working)

Martyn - read up on the term "hard reset" - this sets the car back to factory settings by disconnecting the battery. This is the first thing you should do...
Next I'd suggest seeing if the rear brake lights function correctly - they run through and are controlled by the security locking module and a sure sign if the module is dead.
Also when posting make sure you include the model and year so wiring diagrams can be consulted, there's differences in years.

Just buy a replacement key fob and join your old key to the new buttons
My tip, buy a new X type key fob on the bay of ee, 433MHz for Europe, something else for USA/Canada. Split them as if going to change the battery (YouTube vids), attach the old 'key' front to your new 'buttons' back part and pair as per this video:
. WD40 your ignition lock to free up the metal flap that sometimes sticks where you put the key in (do this!! As may not pair otherwise!!!), do as seen in the video reasonably quickly (not slowly). Replacement key fob is indistinguishable from original, works perfectly. Cost approx 16 euros and easy to do.

Sorry, wrong place
Sorry Vince! I must have been very sleepy yesterday. If any mods know how to move my post to the X types forum, please do that. I've been enthusiastically broadcasting my cheap solution everywhere that googles for 'Jaguar X type remote key fob not working', didn't see this was an X305 thread. Anyway, if buying a new key and putting a new 'remotes' half onto the old 'key' half and then pairing to the car works for anyone here, I'm happy.
