Default Shifter knob and faceplate (R, D, P, Etc..)

Can anyone help with the shifter knob removal in my '03 xj8? I thought it just unscrewed, but it seems extremely tight, and I don't want to break the shaft.
Also, the faceplate on my J gate shifter is cracked and I want to replace it. Can it be "peeled" off or removed somehow and replaced with another plate?
These are trivial things, but I just bought this car and want to make it as nice as possible, it's a real beauty!
Many thanks for all and any help!

The 'lock-nut' on the lower part under the know has 'flats' for an open end wrench.

The shifter knob is only screwed in, but I've seen some with threadlocker applied, so you may have to use a bit more force to remove it.

To replace the faceplate on your J-gate I believe you have to remove the whole assembly. As I recall it was a simple job once you have it all out. Check out this thread, it might be helpful:

While on the job check also if the backlight works, it will save you doing it all again
