Default Shock Bellows Orientation

Confused as to how goes over shock. Pic has how bellows and bumper came in box. Bellows on left is old one. Don’t understand how zip tie is used. Would make sense that bellows should stay up as high as possible to keep dirt off shaft. Have searched with no luck for installed pic.

All I can tell you is the gaiter on the left is OEM, the new gaiter on the right is not. The original gaiters do not use/need a zip tie.

What shocks are those? Bilsteins?

The bellows and bumper came separate from the shocks. The brand is Mevotech.

You can see pictures of the bellows and bumper assembly if you google "Mevotech bumper".

I found a number of pics showing this:

The bumper (the white thing), of course, is up, as shown on your picture.

Thanks. Don't see how the bellows will do anything. It will slide down since it's so much wider than the shock. If the zip tie is there to hold it to the shock, it's for a much wider shock. Did the OEM have a bumper or something to hold the bellows up? The originals on mine were just hanging down with the steel shaft that is supposed to be protected exposed.

I believe the zip tie is to tie the bellows to the bumper. The bumper usually sits tight on the shaft so it should not slide down. And if it does, it does not matter - the shaft is hard chromed and it does not need protection (it won't corrode); what needs to be protected is the entry point of the shaft into the shock body.

This is how I decided to install the bumpers. If bumper on top, whole thing slides down the shock. This way the bumper hold up bellows/gaiter. I used the originals because they compress to almost nothing. The ones that came with the bumpers compress to about three inches. Those ones are also way to wide to zip tie to the shock and too small to fit over the bell on the top of the wheel well.

i don't wanna hinder the party but i would rather take it apart and redo it correctly then have that wild arrangement there, the white thing goes on the top and gaiter hangs down protecting strut from road dirt just as you received it only pushed further on as on Stojanovic photo, otherwise it will collect rubbish and you laughs in your local garage.

Carnival Kid said that is the original bellows. Did the original equipment have a bumper that disintegrated over time? Anyone have a pic? When I replaced the original, the bellows was hanging over the shock tube. The original bellows just has a small hole at the top a little wider than the shaft. If I used the bumper on top of the original bellows, the bellows just slides down. The shape of the top of the original bellows matches the shape of the top of the bumper. I guess I can move the bumper to the top of the bellows (on the inside) and see if it doesn't slide.

Here is a pic of new OEM gaiters and buffers.

The old buffers harden and shrink over time and need to be replaced.

With new buffers the gaiter is held snugly in place.

Carnival Kid - Thanks. I see how the indentations on the bumpers match the holes in the gaiter. I'll move it to the top on the inside of the gaiter. I thought it would slide down so I just put it on the bottom.

yeah it dose become loose over time and falls toward strut, perhaps it could even disintegrate completely given time and harsh dirt, so it is normal, if the new thing slides over the shaft just help it stay in place and use silicone pu foam or whatever you believe will hold for long (preferably till next strut change),
