Currently I have a 2006 X-type VDP in black and absolutely love it! I was thinking of adding another Jag to our fleet. I stumbled upon a 1998 Xj Vanden Plas. This car is in very good condition and has many amenities, including the rear picnic tables. The only thing wrong is the cup holder in the front is broken, seems to be common in this model. The only other thing is that it has 155,000 miles. Should that deter me from buying the car, or not?

pre-2002 XJ8s have a number of mechanical and electrical gremlins, with the 1998s being the worst of all. With 155K miles, it is crucial to learn if this car has had any engine or transmission repairs or upgrades. Now, some might say that if the car were going to croak, it would have done so by now. However, these early ones have the most troubles. Good luck.

I have a 1998 Vanden Plas. I replaced the trany, replaced water pump, and the timing chains were found changed at 55000 KLMS runs great now 68,000 KLMS. A real learning curve though. lots of power lots of comfort. I dont have the super charger so only 290 HP
Mostly the four issues on this car I had to take apart to check anyways, so just replaced them at same time.
Water Pump (propeller failure)
Timing chain tensionors (Cracked)
Transmission (Front A Drum)
Throttle Body (Car Stalls)
