Let me get this straight... You need to drive 70,000 kilometers in one year and you're considering a Jaguar or Land Rover?

why not?

i know landrovers have some love hate about reliability but they appear only unreliable because people are dumb. most warranty service requests are rattlings and similar stuff and because they abuse it way more then usual cars get.
my friends have a defender and last 3 years made 170000km with only oil changes and they are very hard on it (except some dumb stuff and one crash i caused).

needs to be in germany. otherwise tax would kill it.

i will watch that Mobile.de, thank you. I never watched that site, it had some reputation that there are more private sellers then shops (i need it with warranty)

As long as you are buying within the EU there is no tax. If you buy from a dealer you can even choose if you want to pay German or English, French (or whatever country you import from) mwst. Switzerland is a different issue. So is the USA of course. But otherwise, I think you are free to buy anything you want.

When I bought my XJ 2.7 from a dealer I could buy it with or without mwst in Germany, I chose to buy it with mwst since it is 19% i Germany and 25% in Sweden. When I bought the 4.0 (private) I just drove home after buying export plates for 200€.

That said, a right hand drive might not be what you're looking for - they aren't that much cheaper but much harder to sell. But there are more countries in the EU. my experience is that northern Italian Jags are often nice (if they aren't dented and scratched everywhere) because of less road salt etc.

thank you Christian, but the logistic of car too far away from me would be too much. It would have to be deal of a century. I preferably want it somewhere i can go comfortably with train + taxi and leave right away in the car if everything goes smooth.

What about this S-Type V8, very close to you Sandy?

http://www.autoscout24.eu/Details.as...000000&asrc=st

Low kms, just needs some better wheels. Private sale you could probably get it for €10K cash.

Or there is this low-km X350 XJR in Rodgau asking €15'850

http://www.autoscout24.eu/Details.as...000000&asrc=st

But I am wondering why it is so cheap for the low kms...

yea that silver XJR was what i was looking before at and asked about opinion. It looks way too good to be true. Sadly i do not have this kind of moneys (yet at least anyway) but i dont think he would drop the price. He said it is like buying a new car.
I will probably drive there if i can find somewhere at least 15k (more i can maybe discuss or swap wheels or i dont know what). Will take some miniskirt on me and try the table sitting method somebody suggested. I told him i have to drive 300km or so, if there is anything i need to know. He said, no, it cannot be better car. It is a new car, driven in summer sometimes by first owner. Sadly it is not X308 but i am keeping Kitty and it looks like a good deal if everything is as it is described.

That s-type is good (nice color) but little expensive for car i know nothing about. I would have to learn again about gearboxes and bad and good years etc. I hope i get XJR already :-).

Is the gearbox in older XJRs, the 5speed Daimler gearbox as good as that 6speed which is so praised?

Oh ok I missed where that XJR had already been linked...yes seems very cheap, gotta wonder what's wrong with it...but he says it's perfect?

How soon do you want to buy? Just thinking if you want a 2nd opinion on a car & it's not too far from me I could probably take a look.

S-Type with the 4.2 is rock solid. No nikasil, no tensioner problems. Very reliable.
ZF 6HP26 is a strong transmission. Software issues have long been resolved. Just needs a fluid/filter change & it will last 400'000kms no problem.
The motor, gearbox, diff, brakes are the same as used in the X350 XJ.

The 5-speed Merc box in the X308 XJR is strong. The ZF 6HP26 is strong too. With either you'll never have any drum problems like the XJ8. The ZF had software issues early on but a reflash & oil change fixes everything.

Ooooooohhh, this XKR...uh, you want me to talk you out of it? Warum?

Die bekannten Schwachstellen bereits erneuert. Wie: alle Steuerketten, alle Kettenspanner, Wasserpumpe, Kühler, Radlager, uvm... (in letzter Zeit ca. 7-8.000,-€)

So they've done all the big stuff already, sounds pretty good. And it doesn't have the stupid navigation system.

Kms are a little high if you want to do 70K a year in it, but it looks like a very good example.

Hell If I wasn't leaving, i'd be tempted by it...BUT it really needs lowering & a bigger set of wheels...

and that nikasil problem? that is not repairable without engine swap, or is it?

It really only affected the UK cars with poor sulphur-laden fuel as I understand it.

I don't think it was a problem in Germany, the fuel was always pretty good, and in any case, a compression test will show if the bores are ok. There are a lot of Nikasil engines going strong today, those that failed were replaced, those that didn't are still good. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I doubt the previous owner would have spend €8K doing all the ancillary stuff if the Nikasil bores were shot...

I see Sean is reading this thread, he knows.

Thanks Cam

I think nikasil infected by sulphur cars are long gone, all on a boat to China as scrap alloy, the good ones are as in the XKR, running well.

I would ask the question from the dealer, can they supply 'blow by' test result.
Less than 29ltrs/min is fine.

That is a cool car you posted Sandy, I see you in one and I think I called it first on this forum, maybe a subliminal suggestion. Very stylish, all you need then is a very chic pair of Chanel sunglasses, shoes and handbag, in black of course

you know i was very close to get XF instead of my XJ because my dealer wanted me push into it. I didnt liked it design wise (even though it was way more expensive it would for me be less financial problems for me), but it, same as all new jags, looks very decent on the road. it looks like some VW. Nothing too agressive. This XK is about as BAD as it gets, but in black it is not that much. I seen silver XK in person and it thrown me back on the wall from how aggressive it was. But in Black with some boring wheels, hello kitty exhaust ends, maybe some V6 TDI sticker on the back it would look not too fancy?
