In the trunk when I hit a bump. Nothing in the trunk, I also removed the spare tire and jack still hearing it. Any ideas? The car only has 43k on it been in the garage most of the life it's a 98 xj8 VDP. Could bushings have deteriorated?

Thanks

Yes, could be bushings, tie rods, etc. Lots of info on this site about those things.

Hope you get to the bottom of it, nothing more annoying than not knowing what's making the noise.

worn lower shock bushes are favourite. Hope that gives you something to focus on.

jack it up, remove the rear wheels and shoot some lithium grease around the rubber lower shock bushings (while you are at it, tighten and lubricate the parking brake cable and retainer). put the wheels back and drive it over the same road surface where you hear the clatter. If it is quieted, it is the shock bushings. T'ain't an easy fix: lots of stuff on Google and in this forum on replacing the rear shocks which apply also to changing the bushings even tho your shocks probably are fine with your low mileage.

I think Sean B had a post a couple of months back that explained the problem.

A lot of it's just age. Rubber and urethane naturally deteriorate over time. And you're right, exposure to salty air will make them deteriorate more quickly, even just sitting still. And there's all kinds of fluids that can get onto the bushings under there, be it a little bit of diff oil from a very slightly leaking seal, grease, what have you. Basically, your car is 16 years old now, things will start to deteriorate just from age. I know it happened to my 2000 XJR. Even though it only had 70,000 miles on it at the time, the front shock bushings were basically shot and had to be replaced, and when I did it made a MASSIVE improvement in how the car drove, and got rid of many of the squeaks/rattles that had been going on. Your case really does sound like the rear upper shock bushing. As it deteriorartes, it allows the shock to wiggle up and down in the mount, and you get a very distinct rattle when you go over bumps that move the shock quickly up and down. One other thing you may check is your front swaybar bushings. They can produce a strong rattle if they are deteriorated, and it's surprising how far back in the car the sound can seem to come from, as the chassis wil transfer sound a surprising distance rearward.

My Granny bought a 1971 Chevy Vega and in 1983 the tires were cracked and leaking. I told her she needed tires but the car only had 13,000 miles and she did NOT want to buy tires because they had plenty of tread left.

In many cases...............................
LOW MILEAGE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DETERIORATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would someone be so kind as to let me know where I could find a parts list and where I would purchase the new parts?

What would be the recommendations?

Thanks
