Speaker for a Standard Audio System XJR 2001
Hi everyone,
One of my speakers has popped, it has a low reverberation (almost like a rattle) when volume is turned up.
This speaker is about 6.5" in diameter but I think it's actually a 4" speaker (measuring the cone itself) - is that correct?
Can I replace this speaker (both front speakers) with any 2/3/4 way speaker? Is there anything that will improve the sound (without replacing the head unit - which I realise is probably the weak link here).
I'm interested to know if anyone else has replaced speakers....

The standard size speakers are 6.5" Philips in the Alpine system.

Shouldn't really make any difference.
The standard system in most X308's is Alpine and the upgraded one is by Harman Kardan

I don't think I have ever seen a SuperCharged car without Premium Sound.
To VIN (878718) the speaker grills will have Harmon Kardon printed and from VIN (F00035) it will be ALPINE. The standard audio will have plain grills.
Phillips marked speakers are standard and premium sound will have higher power speakers for the external boot mounted amplifier.
The Premium Sound also has a rear shelf mounted subwoofer.

Premium= front tweeters are mounted in the A pillars. Speakers usually say Harmon Kardon on midrange covers up to 1999. Beyond I believe they say Alpine. Trunk mounted CD changer will have an amp above it.
Standard= front tweeters are mounted behind the door handles, just like the rear doors. No markings on midrange covers, rear CD changer does NOT have a amp mounted above it.
In premium sound speaker wires terminate in the trunk, in standard they terminate behind the head unit in the dash. If you are installing a new amp the premium system is much easier to adapt (I also highly recommend replacing the 20 year old head unit for adaptability, upgraded sound, USB, bluetooth, etc). Most US spec XJRs had premium sound, usually easily spotted by tweeters in the front A pillars.
