This sounds like the exciter ring issue... turn the key, and no crank/no start.
You'll find the exciter ring is the black plastic circle around the key switch on the column. Up inside the column (above the speaker for the warning chimes, turn signal noise, etc.) is a white plastic plug which has the two wires for the exciter. Disconnect the plug and check for 33.4Ω (or close to it) through that coil.
15 minutes tops to drop the lower column shroud (two philips screws) pop the plug, check the resistance, and pop to column back together it it checks OK. The ease of checking this should make it one of the first items in a diagnostic process.
