Starter Question
I've looked in here and haven't seen a similar post to this so here goes. I have a '98 XJ8 that will not start. Let me explain a little, the starter works and spins but only turns the engine about 3/4 turn and then stops abruptly. If you give the key another turn it just engages and make a grinding sound. In order to get the engine to turn over again 3/4 with the starter I have to turn the engine manually at the crank pulley with the 25mm bolt until I cant turn it anymore due to compression. Turn the key again and the starter engages and turns the motor over but again only 3/4 of the way and stops abruptly. Any Ideas before I go tearing off the starter?

I realize that now it's in the wrong section. Also to update I did a little more wrenching and determined that the passenger side secondary timing chain tensioner broke and is wedged between the gear and the chain so that's why the engine will not turn. I'll be changing the timing chains soon and will update my result.
