So where do you start? Many of the intermittent starting problems are related to electrical component issues and a few related to fuel. First you need to verify that you have a constant fuel pressure to the engine. Your car is an “R” and that means you have 2 fuel pumps. If you have pressure then when the car does not start move the shifter from “P” to “N” and see if you eliminate the problem. If this is not the problem then you need to check your starter relay and then the electrical feed to the engine compartment. That fuse relay / fuse box feeds the engine components. When doing this use caution, you do not want to short the system out. I am attaching a few diagrams to help on the electrical.

Also you need to go to the Intro section and do an intro. You will not be able to view any attachments until you meet the required criteria.

Check fuel pressure when this event happens... I had the exact same thing happen to me on my 1999 XJ.

The fuel pump was starting to die and would intermittantly not work - until the last time when it didn't work anymore. Fortunately it was in my driveway when this happened.

With no check engine lights on and presumbly no codes flagged, I would STRONGLY suspect this as the pumps are notorious for failing. In fact, I would bet money this is the problem given your symptoms.

If you do have fuel pressure, search the forums for "bore wash" and there are special start up procedures to get her running.
