Default Starting Problems!

Hi guys, I have a 2001 jaguar xjr and have had a massive headache starting the car. It seems to only start if I turn the key all the way and then go under the car and bridge the starter with a piece of metal. After that car runs fine but wont start back up if I turn it off.

I have checked and switched relays, fuses, exciter ring, ground strap and cleaned the connections. The gear selector does move freely when the key is on.
Help mate's!

Your starter circuit is on page 53 for a SC engine

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto.../jagxj2001.pdf

The duel linear switch is your transmission in park switch

The ignition switch is the same as on the earlier X300 version of your car

The last key rotation detent is the starter enable and is pin 1 to 5 closing as you have the connector removed in pic

No need to remove the round orange switch from the mechanical key barrel

On a meter this will be a wavery signal as a closed ( 0 ohms ) when rotated because it is spring loaded to open the circuit

On the other side of the connector on the car direction half the pin 5 is a car frame ground and should be close to 0 ohms

This connector can get corroded because of liquid intrusion like on mine

One of the things that you can easily check is the in-line connector shown on the pics. It might be loose or corroded.

The X308 has a habit of the battery fuse link nuts coming loose near the positive battery post

I am assuming you swapped the specific starter relay ?

notice in the pic 2 groups of relays the same and dependent on the steering gear being in the way

On a different note the gear shift interlock solenoid on page 67 may be effected by the controlling BPM with a bad battery connection

You mentioned the gear selector does not freely move

great news! She is back on the road. I guess whoever worked on it shorted not one but two relays. Thanks for all the help much appreciated.

Now I have to find new seat covers or used seats for the front

Before you start tearing things apart, try another ignition key. I've started to notice that the key I regularly use, sometimes doesn't start the car right away, I have 3 keys, not including the valet, 1 doesn't work at all, 1 works intermittently and the other works just fine.....worth a try.

oops I didn't see that you fixed the problem, nice looking car.

New skins next to the foam and not just covers are available at a decent price

The skins from someones review is not as suptal or soft as the original

There is a interior color code on the door sticker

https://www.lseat.com/products/1998-...ers-front.html

They will send you a sample swatch to see color match and I assume its not the best leather as they would use the better shop material for production of the actual

Just guessing

They take some time to condition with some lotion and stretch out to form better
