Is it possible that a connector on the back of the radio was partially pulled out of the back of the radio? The radio lighting and steering wheel controls all connect to the head unit at a white 20-way connector on the back of the head unit (IC10 on the schematics).
The radio ground is via a braided cable to a ground stud just forward of the gear selector mechanism on the transmission tunnel, but if everything on the radio is working other than the lighting and steering wheel volume control, the ground is probably OK.
I don't think you'll need this, but since I made these notes I'll include them:
The power for the radio "dimmer override" is on a Red wire with a Green tracer; the radio illumination supply is on a Red wire with Pink tracer. These wires run to connector IC1, a white 14-way multi-lock connector at the "LH Heelboard" (maybe the left hand footwell finisher trim or scuttle?); then to connector CA19, a yellow 20-way multi-lock connector at the "Left A-post behind finisher."
The steering wheel radio control switches connect to the radio via a Purple/Yellow wire; and the switches connect to logic ground via a Black/Orange then Black Pink wire to Logic Ground FC17R on the EMS bulkhead ground stud.
The common point for those circuits is the IC10 connector on the back of the radio head unit. Hope this is helpful! Please keep us informed.
Cheers,
Don
