Stereo Upgrade

Stereo Upgrade
So I've read a lot of threads on here about upgrading the sound system. Everything from replacing speakers only to just the head unit. I have the 2000 XJ8 with the premium Alpine system and 6 disc changer in the trunk. I understand this has some sort of special cable(AIE or AEI) for the wiring. What I'd like to do is replace the head unit and get the steering wheel control adapter and have the antenna go up and down when switched on. Not looking to spend a lot but would like to upgrade somewhat. What I'm asking I guess. Is it possible to just start from scratch and run all needed wiring like there was no stereo in there? Might be up to mounting a small amp in the trunk. I would like to possibly mount the amp where the changer is in the trunk. How hard is this? Are there any downsides to what I'm thinking about doing with the Jaguar electronics? Am I over/under thinking this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if you're going to redo the entire system, then sure, it's easily doable. Obviously a lot of work, depending on your skill and time frame. The power antenna that's in the car may be able to be triggered with the headunit's ant wire (most have this nowadays). I'm not sure if it needs anything beyond that, but worst case I suppose would be an aftermarket power antenna altogether. The factory CD frame location would be fine for an aftermarket amp, as it's been done plenty. It's on my radar for later this summer also. Not looking forward to the wiring runs, but it's the simplest way to go from scratch.
