Strange door mirror behaviour

1999 Daimler Super V8. Have changed the remote batteries but the remote still only operates when it is waved very close to the driver's door outer handle. Occassionally it will work from about 10 feet but only once in 15 attempts to open or lock the car. The passenger door mirror (RHD car) has now started to move all the way down and fully out and will not stop moving until the end of the travel is reached.
It only does this when you open the car with the remote. If you lock with the remote everything remains as was. When opened with the key everything is normal and the same when you lock it.
I am at a loss to understand why only one component is affected when unlocking with the remote and nothing is affected when unlocked with the key.
Any one out there had any similar experiences or have any wonder solutions.

Sounds like it's behaving correctly - from the handbook the driver's mirror dips on unlocking so you can see the curb. Have you got a handbook with the car?
The aerial for the remote is in the rear screen, there's a little connector that pushes into the screen in the centre top. Is it connected?
Hope this helps.

Have you tried re-setting the remote? Maybe you should
set it to where the key is not associated with seat/steering
wheel/mirror settings.
Since it isn't the drivers mirror, that is odd. I guess the car
is not supposed to do it.
If that doesn't work, perhaps the little metal 'spoon' inside the
J-Gate that tells the car it's in reverse is broken, and the
reversing process for the mirrors engages when the car is
not even running.
