Default Strange, help!

Hello,

I can't seem to make it out. I've been reading on here and it's very different on my car. I have a 1998 XJR, 4.0 liter. I see some posts stating that the amount of oil to put in is 7.5 quart. As I added 7.5, it goes way above the full mark/dot on the dipstick. But when I put only 6 quarts, it hits perfect on the second dot at full. Which is correct or incorrect? And if I run with too much oil as indicated by the dipstick after putting 7.5, what will happen? Is it different amount from the N/A xj8 model and the supercharge xjr model? Thanks

7.5 quarts or 7 litres is the required amount for an engine that is fitted with an oil cooler.

The correct amount is 6.34 quarts or 6 litres for both the Na and XJR engines.

Check oil level dead cold and level with the correct level showing at top mark.
These engines can be sensative to oil level as the sump is relatively shallow.

Their was a later revision on dipsticks and sump amounts on 2002 and later engines

Jaguar issued a TSB in Nov 1999 about the increased oil capacity.
No changes were made to the engine other than a revised dipstick and supplemental info in the owner's manual.

Adding an additional liter of oil will not harm your engine.
The original dipstick will show 'overfull' but you can either re-mark your original dipstick or buy a later one marked correctly. (or you can just underfill and ignore all the later fill advise)

Thanks so much for the help guys! How would I determine if I have the oil cooler fitted or not?
