Default Stubborn Trip Computer

My Trip Computer seems to calculate and display just fine, but the physical button on the turn signal stalk that steps through the various options only works when it wants to. I disassembled it and all parts and connections look solid. FWIW, the dash mounted buttons work perfectly.

Any advice how to test or what to look for? Vehicle in question is a 1998 VDP with 125K miles.

Thanks!

Likely you need aturn signal switch. A lot ofwiring behind that switch, goes down under steering column.
Easy to change, just make sure you get right one. Ie auto lights or not, they may ask rain sensing or not.

Mine is acting screwy as well, whenever I use the turn signal at night the headlamps flash into high beam and I think it sorta pisses off the people I am passing. I got another used one so I am gonna try it and see if it fixes it.

Not so sure about being easy to change there FJT but I guess maybe you've done a few. There'slot's ofstubborn mysteriouslocking wiring connectors, tie wraps to cut and you also gotta pull the steering wheel. On my Ford truck you just pull the column plastic off and the switch screws in from the side, no need to pull the steering wheel.

If I need a new switch any guesses on what they cost?

The button for the Trip Computer on the turn signal stalkseems like such a simple mechanical switch mechanism, is it really that involved to repair or replace? Pulling the steering wheel is where I draw the line -either I'll live with it, or get a quote from my local dealer.

Anyone know if it is a pressure or electrical contact based switch? I could probably fabricate something suitable if I had a clue to its design.

Thanks!

It is a momentary switch. The wheel comes off easy. Turn the steering wheel from center, 90 degrees. There is a 30 torx holding the airbag in. Then rotate 180 from there and the 2nd 30 torx is there. They done come all the way out, just loosen them until the airbag can be lifted. Then, disconnect battery and wait 15 minutes. Then disconnect the airbag connector, remove the bolt holding steering wheel on, use a sharpie or similar to mark the wheel position for alignment. Then disconnect the lower connector that comes through the wheel. Remove wheel. Remove two 25 torx bolts holding on the turn signal switch, cut the tie wraps and disconnect the connectors. Reverse to install.
Do not mess with the airbag connector until battery is disconnected and do not reconnect until job done. Also you need to remove the steering column cowl. 5 phillips screws. 2 lower and 3 upper.
If you have dealer do it, shouldn't ever be more than 2 hour labor.

Wow, thanks for the detailed directions, you make it sound easy enough for me to consider doing it myself.

I found the Turn Signal Switch w/Auto Headlamp (Part #P3010-156726) online at PartsandAccessories.com, on sale for $136.46 from $212.95, with free shipping!

Just to clarify, when putting everything back together, I reconnect the airbag connector before I reconnect the battery?

Disconnect battery first and wait. Reconnect battery last. Caution first while working around airbag.
