Hey this is my first post but i looked through the forums before i made it. I pulled into a parking space, put car in park then went to leave and put it in reverse and it wont come out of reverse. the shift knob had a hard time moving along the tree. it will go into 2-4 on the left and up to R, but wont go all the way up the right. It was sitting for a couple months and i had to buy a new battery for it (Duralast), got it in took it to my wifes work to pick her up, and the shifter kept slipping out of D into N. i had to hold it in D to keep driving. got to her work and it got stuck. I couldnt take the key out so i ditached the battery and but the e brake on. looked through the forums and saw the selector bracket bolt fix, looked under car and they were still in there, tight. took the star key shaped thing off the shifter face and depressed it down with my key and wiggled the knob back in forth trying to get it to pop back in but nothing, The brake lights work when i hit them, i saw someone say something about the gear box being unable to read a stop or park if the lights dont work.
also i have a ticking noise thats been going on since before this started. i think its a loose timing chain tensioner. im just giving as much info as i can, maybe it makes a diffrence somewhere. its a 99 xjr with about 107000 miles on it. i called 2 garages in town and niether would work on it, and its in my wifes works parking lot and i got to fix it soon. On a budget

Since you say that the under car shifter mechanism is all tight, the other candidate is the shifter cable and the adjustment thereof.
The fact that you say you have to hold it in "D" makes that an even stronger candidate.
Except for the interlocks, the transmission does not care where the shifter is sitting, only where the internal mechanism is sitting. The XJR/Mercedes transmission combination is generally trouble free.
Your next move would be to download JTIS for the procedures and then work on the cable and microswitch adjustments.

Welcome to the Jaguar Forum.
Check fuse# 7 (15 amp fuse) in the rear left hand fusebox (LH drive - driver side - rear seat heelboard)- it controls "Body processor module (battery supply for solenoids, lamps and motors). It also controls the locking of the Gear shifter.
I could not get the shifter out of park. 1st I thought that the brake light switch on the brake pedal might be the problem.
Then I also noticed that were a number of other things like the interior lights not coming on when I opened the driver's door and the garage door opener did not work. I also mentioned to my wife that there was something wrong with the windshield washers (since they were not working).
It could also be a matter of adjusting the Gear shifter linkage. But I would check the fuse first.

Also look at this PDF file on the Gear shifter:

NOTE:
When setting the selector cable, ensure that the selector lever on the transmission casing is still in the 'N' position.
Adjust the selector cable from inside the vehicle.
1. Confirm that the selector lever is in the 'N' position.
2. Adjust the nuts to lock against the bracket without moving the set position of either the gear selector lever or the selector lever on the transmission casing.
3. Tighten to 22-28 Nm.
4. Verify the 'N' setting.
Check that all released connectors are safely insulated and connect the vehicle battery.
Switch ON the ignition.Adjust the position of the linear switch so that the selector 'N' position graphic illuminates.
Tighten the four screws to 0,7-1 Nm.
Move the gear selector to 'R' to confirm that the 'R' position graphic illuminates.
Check that the engine will start when the gear selector is in the 'N' and 'P' positions, but not in any other position.

Hi
You should be able to purchase the tension spring (Part# CAC9068) from your local Jaguar Dealership or online - gaudinjaguarparts .com ($5.63 plus shipping - call them) or terrysjag .com ($5.80 plus shipping - call them). They usually charge from around $13 to $15 (Fedex or UPS) for shipping - if you call them maybe lower shipping.
Also sngbarratt .com $6.30 - special order - plus shipping - uses US mail for small packages - Tel 1 800 452 478

so i put it all back together, and it works, shifts to all gears. i didnt do anything, just disassembled J and reassembled it. but now it lunges forward when i but it in drive or reverse, with a EEERR sound. and now a gearbox fault and checkengine light came on. where does the tensioner spring attach to from the solonoid. also it seems like it doesnt want to change gears, i might be imagining this but i took it on a short drive thru town and when i press the accelorator it revs up and hits 4000rpm at 40mph and doesnt seem to switch to a higher gear.
