Hello all. My '03 XJ8 that has been a great ride for several years, just had her transmission blow out a few days ago. No warning, now slip, just all of a sudden it is in limp mode and stuck in 3rd gear. Wow. I'm in the middle of a move to another state and now I don't think I am taking my cat with me. Timing is just wrong on this. Putting her up for sale to anyone that wants to put a transmission into a otherwise beautiful car. Guess I'll be signing off for a while now.

 

How do you know the transmission failed?

Fyi, if it's in Limp home mode (stuck in 3rd gear) and says "gearbox fault" on the dash that is often a different problem entirely. Run a code reader on it, I've had that and it was a sensor failed on the throttle body - a $1k fix but not catastrophic.

 

Could be oil seeping up the wire into the TCM.
