Sunroof Gasket Replacement Tips
Just passing along a few tips for installing a new sunroof gasket. For anyone in the U.S., JCNA has a tool loan program for members (assume the Brits have the same?), or you can purchase the tool online for about $150. It makes the installation pretty simple. The key is to ensure that the inside rubber edge of the gasket is physically contacting the underside of the sunroof panel before crimping - you can actually hear the gasket snap into place along the straight edges of the panel when you position it correctly. If you crimp with this edge above the panel, the gasket will not be flush with the top surface and it will not be properly secured.
Using the crimper is straight forward - the anvil swivels to allow use of either a straight edge or a radiused edge for the corners. What you're crimping is a u-shaped steel insert in the rubber extrusion. If you can't get the inside gasket edge to contact the panel surface just spread the gasket edges to widen the opening - a 1/4" socket extension works well for this. Here are a few pics of an XJR panel destined for a Mark 2 project.
