Suspension "bumps"
2001 XJ8L - 67000 miles
I had previously posted in about dull thuds while going over shallow bumps. I looked under the vehicle and noticed nothing abnormal... all the rubber bushings I could see were healthy. Nothing cracked or crumbly. My next action is to replace the shocks on the vehicle to see if that eliminates the problem. At 67000 I figure the shocks are about ready to get replaced anyway. The noise seems to quiet significantly in sport mode... but I can't measure or prove that. Problem is that apparently the shocks that are meant to replace the ones on there (shocks that support sport mode) are a little expensive. I don't mind paying this if required, as thats part of owning the car. My questions are:
I rarely use sport mode on this vehicle (really never). Is it ok to put a quality aftermarket shock that does not support "sport mode".?
If shocks with sport mode are required what are some quality aftermarket brands?
Provided I get the shocks are they pretty standard to install for a good mechanic that's not a Jag mechanic?

RE: Suspension "bumps"
sport mode button has nothing to do with suspension.. only trani and engine.
if a car has sports suspension.. it has adaptive shocks which are expensive.. to see if you have them .. open hood and look at shock tower and see if wires plug in to shock tower.. on your car i dont think they have them.. usually on xjr 100 and xkr's yours wud of came with comfort suspension or sport suspension.. we in canada dont have the xj8 L but im assuming it's just a xj8 with vdp interior.. so i wud assume your car has comfort suspension.. and i wud go with jaguar bilstein shocks,, aftermarket ones dont last too long pretty simple to change.. any mechanic shud hopefully be able to do it.

Thank you for the quick response! The guy at the auto parts store said I need those dual mode shocks was the reason I went down this path. I believe you though as he seemed hurried to get me out of the place. Should have gone in mid day I guess, it was approaching 6:00PM [>:]. Anyway, glad you explained that as one of my questions was going to be : How does the car adjust the shock? I see no controllers or wires or other features that would allow external control. Just a plain looking shock.
Thanks much!

Finally broke down and went to my mechanic. Turns out the car is perfect underneath except for the steering mechanism. He claims the link was a little loose and he tightened it, didn't even charge me. Whatever he did the problem cleared up... he said it would not go away entirely because there was still some play in but it didn't need replacing. As the problem got worse I noticed I was feeling the thuds through the steering wheel so this makes some sense.
