Default Tensioner's - VIN

I was looking at the TSB's for my 02 XJR

The one for the tensioner's list VIN numbers up to 41862 for the tensioner start up rattle. This is dated 2005 and lists the problem as 98-02

I understand that a more precise way to go is with the engine number, although I could never find mine??

Knowing that they changed the design twice -- What do you suppose this indicates?

My 02 has a VIN of F45829

My VIN is 45848, sept 2001 and has metal tensioners - You could be lucky, as the engines supplied from early august 2001 had these tensioners. The engine number, you'll have to get under the car and use a torch, looking at the front of the car, its on the rhs of the engine block, there'll be a host of numbers, one row is the bearing sizes, the other will be engine number.....

The cats list in the spare wheel well gives a date of manufacture, if its sept 01 you can be fairly certain it'll have the later tensioners...but, the only way to be certain is to reference the engine number, or whip the cam cover off and look.

The only link between the VIN and an engine serial number/manufacturer date is in a dealers Jaguar database.

Sean - Our cars must have been stable mates. Mine also a Sept 01 build.

I would like to know what happened at 41863 -- since the TSB ends at 62 clearly they changed something at this VIN # start.

And from my understanding the second generation tensioner was way before that.

I do not have the build numbers per year in front of me so I can not estimate how many cars they built per month. I also do not know if they built all of the same model at one time of if they built XJR's in batches
