Is there a way to inspect tranny valve body assembly
Hi
Is there a way to inspect the valve body assembly for defects without removing the transmission?
Maybe the valve body assembly can be removed while the transmission is still installed in the car. Then checked for possible wear problems.
Can this be done just by removing the transmission pan to get access to the valve body assembly? Is it difficult task to remove the valve body after you remove the pan?
Also you might fragments of a broken forward disk (A disk) in the pan.
If this is possible, then maybe this type of inspection should be added to the maintenance schedule.
It might save future problems with the ZF5HP24 transmission.

Pages from the ZF5HP24 Repair Manual
Hi
I downloaded the ZF5hp24 Transmission Repair Manual on the internet.
The manual is 130 pages long.
I selected and extracted the pages (16 pages) that show the information about the valve body assembly and the A disk (forward disk).
Here is the PDF extraction file:
ZF5hp24 Pages from Repair manual 1.pdf
This is a TSB on the Valve Body Assembly:

Here is the link to the post with the full 130 page manual.

The pressure regulator valve is in a section of the body that faces the other section so the one part must be removed from the main body to inspect the piston and bore.
The spring is pretty strong so I used a longer screw to start the plate back on the body and then replaced it with the correct shorter bolt after the others were pulled up to hold the spring tension. A 6 X 1.00 stud could be used with a nut until the plate is tight.
Here is a TSB for the pressure regulator.

You don't have to remove the valve body from the trans if you only want to inspect the lower front VB pressure regulator valve and bore. I think you can just drop the lower front portion.
You can remove and replace all valve body components with the gearbox in the car. You have to remove it for the forward drum replacement but the valve body does not need to be removed for the drum replacement. (in fact you don't need to drain the trans to replace the drum if you set the gearbox on it's tail in a large deep drum or pail with the torque converter pointing UP)
It is better to keep it vertical to keep the 'frictions and steels' from moving when you slide the drums out.
It will go back together easier if you don't move the clutch parts so the notches line up.
