Smile tick tock

Hey guys, I started my xj8 today and heard the ticking sound. I have experienced first hand the devestation on a failed tensioner so...it just have to do it, but I have no garage. I am going to attempt the zip tie method of doing this in the next few weeks and was wondering if there was anything that I sould know before I start. Thanks in advance.

Default Secondary Tensioner Replacement

Hi Neil,

I replaced my tensioners about a month ago using the zip tie method. Used the following link to "Read up" on it.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ics-how-52653/

Also here is the link of what I posted.

I also replaced all the cam cover gaskets and O rings; bought them on eBay.
I was fortunate with regard to the oil filler tube attachment to the left hand head as someone before me had cut away part of metal attachment on the tube so I was able to remove quite easily.

So, I think I may understand the cause of the ticking, but I am not entirely sure. It looks like the 2nd gen tensioners are already in the car, however on the drivers side, there is slack in the chain underneath and not the top. That tensioner seems to be doing nothing as far as taking chain slack out. What do you guys think?

It worked out great, no tick. Had to rotate the engine once over completely to take the slack out Made sure no teeth on the gear skipped. Purrs like a big cat should.
