Default Time for a new transmission?

So I am stopped at a light and when it turns green I give the car gas and it does not move for 5 seconds or so then I hear a clunk and the car starts moving forward with the tranny fault light now on. I make it home-about a mile- and park in my driveway. The car seems to go into reverse at this point but moving forward in drive seems labored if and when the transmission engages. I just replaced the battery and starter a week ago,as the starter had a bad bearing and the battery was the original from 2001. I don't have a code reader. Should I just have it towed to a transmission shop or anything I should try first? Forgot-the car has 103+/- thousand miles. I know lucky to get that far with a sealed tranny, right?
Thanks

Pull the code and see what it says. No telling what all fixing that known bad will also solve.

this is what happened to my 2000 vanden plas. that thunk is the transmission skipping first gear and going into second. thats why its so hesitant.

mine drive fine in every other gear though.

Update, The car has been in storage since this happened. Winter and salt here in upstate NY is no place for a Jag to be on the roads. I'll get it fixed in April/May when the roads clear. I plan on picking up a code reader,so I'll post codes then. After that will either fix myself or tow to shop.

Iknow this sounds crazy, my first xj did the same thing when the alternator went out. The first indication that there was a problem was the tranny. Since you just replaced the starter, I would do a quick check of the line from the starter to the alt, make shure the batt has a full charge, and verify your problem still exists.

Probably won't solve your issue but you never know.

And the bad news is most code readers will not read transmission codes. The only thing the manufacturer must make accessible are the OBD codes for the engine. You may get lucky but will probably need someone with specific Jaguar communications.

Transmissions usually bug out when altenators go because the car runs off of w/e power the battery has which is not much after a few miles. Its enough to power the plugs and ecu but when it come to the tcm its the first to quit working correctly.

That heppened to me on both my 91 Q45 and my 98 Kia. However I doubt thats the issue at hand here.
