timing chain guide problem??

I am in the middle of replacing all of the chains, guides, tensioners on a 2000 XJR. I bought the complete kit from Christophers. I've got a question:
The straight guides he supplied me with are slightly different than the two I took out.
The two I took out have a round hole and an elongated hole with the elongated hole located up top on the mounting pin and the bolt goes through the round hole on the bottom. This places the raised shoulder of the guide against the block, which protects the block from possible chain wear.
The new ones from Christopher mount differently. If I want the raised shoulder against the block, then the elongated hole will be on the bottom where the mounting bolt goes and the round hole will be up top on the mounting pin.
I assumed the elongated hole was to allow for expansion/contraction. With the elongated hole on bottom and a bolt holding it in place, it can't possibly expand or contract any longer. Here is my question: Is the elongated hole there to allow for expansion/ contraction or just for ease in alignment for installation?
Am I ok installing these guides with the elongated hole on bottom with the bolt going through them? Oops, one more question. The online instructions call for a split lock ring that goes on the crankshaft just prior to the pulley blot. I didn't take one off when I disassembled everything.
Do I need one?
Thanks for any help,
Sanford
