Default Timing Chain Total replacment

I posted about 6 months ago that my secondary tensioner are in need of replacement. Well the car is untouched, it hasn't been started or moved in 6 months. I was toying with the idea of getting rid of it and getting a newer car and not deal with the timing chains Etc. The car has 104k and figured might as well change the whole thing, which came out to about $750 ruffly( reason for long wait). Well i decided to tackle changing the whole assembly myself. I'm fairly mechanically inclined changing part, i never got deep enough to redo a top end etc. But got pretty good taking stuff apart and replacing. My question is do i have a chance fixing it myself or is the job to hard??? What tools needed?? Anyone find a good place for the complete kit?? Any How to threads??? Thanks

There are many threads on tensioner replacement. I never had worked on an overhead cam setup but found nothing difficult in replacing the secondary ones. Removing the crank pulley would appear to be the most difficult issue and that is solved by using a longer piece of pipe on your breaker bar. You will need the cam timing tool set that can be rented. I suspect that you can beat the price by half of what you quoted by using the Lincoln LS parts.

What model year is your car? It would help to include that information in your signature or at least in the post.

Here is my 'library' but I am sure there are lots more out there.

If you are reasonably confident I'd say have a go, it's obviously not your only car so you have the luxury of time.
If you hit a snag you can always come back and ask for help.

Sorry need to make my sig. It's a 1998 XJ8, while im in there i was thinking of changing the water pump and thermostat. Still think its the original ones. Car has 104k, reason for me wanting to redo the everything instead of just the secondary tensioners. Thanks Test, you're always there when in need
