Tools needed to replace starter xj8

As the title States I need to know what tools are needed to make this job is easy as possible. I have a 1999 XJ8 that has not been running in two years and was given to me as a gift by a friend. I replaced all eight spark plugs charged the battery and the car fired sputtered and died. I was anxious and excited and continued to crank the car until I assume the starter died. I need to know what tools are needed to make this job as easy as possible to replace the starter in my driveway on jack stands. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

It actually sounds like you need you new battery charged and maybe a fuel pump, not a starter. Regular hand tools should be all you need for a starter. But if it is a starter, have it towed to your closest rebuilder of starters and alternators: cheaper, faster, will trouble shoot your issues, have it done in under an hour, and you get to keep the skin on your knuckles.
Since most of the folks on this site live in the Colonies, it would be useful to tell us where Waldoboro is located.

I live in waldoboro Maine. I charged the battery. The car turned over and would kick but not completely run. It has old gas in it. I put all new plugs in. The car had blueish smoke coming out both tail pipes and smelled like gas. Does that still mean a bad fuel pump or flooding? I can hear it run when I key the ignition. When I depress the fuel rail valve gas comes out but not spraying way up in the air. Thoughts? After charging the battery again the starter turned very slowly and now just clicks with a full battery.

Good, much better description of your problem. Maybe bore wash (see replies elsewhere); but it now sounds like starter is the first order. If you are near a larger city (Bath, Portland), maybe a local starter/alternator rebuilder can fix the starter -- you will still have a hard starting problem: bad gas, dirty/clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump and bore wash.
