Default Tranny issue

I have a 2000 xj8. The tranny is very slow the shift into fourth gear. In fact I need to start of in 3 because starting off in D is an issue with shifting out og first gear

Where should I look first to fix the issue

Thx

I'm afraid that isn't good news. This sounds like an A drum failure, can you give details of how the fault has come about? Slipping in gears? odd noises? Slow selection can also be low fluid level. When was the gearbox last serviced?

I'd suggest getting it looked at by a trans specialist.

That is strange one. The A drum is used for first through fourth gear, so that may not be the problem. Fluid level and proper diagnosis is the way to go.

I will check fluid level. I thought they were sealed units. Where do I find the filler tube for the tranny fluid. Does it take normal tax

Thx

There is no dipstick. Do a search for 5HP24 and you'll find info on fluid checking.
