I would use regular Mercon V suitable fluid, i.e., Mobil 1 ATF or similar. Should be a lot cheaper.

Personally, I would stay away from the quick oil change places. There is a little more to it than drain/refill. Perhaps you could find an independent to give you a price. My local shop quoted $100 labor plus ATF and filter.

If you have the XJ8 with the ZF 5HP24 transmission, there are a number of name brand ATF's that meet the ESSO 71141 spec for about $5 qt. MERCON V is not one of them although some have used it. You will only be able to drain/refill about 6 qt of the 10. The rest will remain in the torque converter. Drain and refill again in a 1000 miles and you will have about as complete a change as is available.

The filter is generally available for $30 or less.

BMW uses the same transmission if that expands you search for an indy shop.

that price quote was for a independent jag shop in tempe, AZ. Quoted me 180 for labor.

Guess i will have to start searching for a independent bmw shop in the area bc i really want to get this done, but can't see spending 570 to do so.

thanks for the info though..at least i know i dont have to spend the 300 on jaguar atf..ouch

I've worked at VW dealers and Jaguar dealers and I work on both of those car makes now at my own shop. I have about 30 liters of ESSO 71141 from years at the Jag dealer and I have been using it for the VW 01M trans fluid changes (I work on alot more VWs than Jags) The VW fluid is G 052 162 A2 and it IS THE SAME as ESSO 71141. The VW fluid is about $16.00 a liter and I will use that in the ZF5HP24 when I run out of 71141. I don't want to take the chance of a customer blaming me for gearbox faults because I mixed fluids (mercon, valvoline etc.) People can do whatever they want with their own cars, but repair shops have to be concerned with liability. If a customer brings me their own oil and tells me to install it, then all I have to worry about is that I did the job correctly and used the correct amount. If the gearbox fails because of incorrect fluid, it is on them.

as Test Point has stated
Jaguar, Land Rover and BMW use the 5HP24
I think some Audi cars might as well.

That's a good policy Bob. I'm the same way with customers. I will give my opinion/advice when asked, which is to use one of the commercial domestic ATF products. I personally recommend Castrol multi-vehicle Import ATF in the 5HP24, and I have dozens out there running successfuly on it and 10,000s of miles logged, including my own 5HP24. I did take a little more risk on the recommendation part, always letting the customer make the final decision, which is my protection, but I have yet to find example one of a failed 5HP24 with other than Esso fluid in it. Maybe call me lucky!

Past that, if the educated customer wants the Esso, I do the best I can getting it at a good price for them, or I have them hunt it down with recommendations to try the local VW dealer.

Theusualsuspect - (Good movie BTW) - The $570 price is about right. I do know of another indy in the Phoenix area if you want to check other pricing. Not sure what he'll recommend for fluid though. I believe he is still in business, but I met him at a car show.

steve- one of my favorite movies.

sure if you can give me his info. i will at least call him for a quote.

is there a way i can check to see if this service has been done or to check to see the condition of the ATF? I just dont know the history of the vehicle.

Also,

I understand it would be on me, but how do you guys feel about me buying my own Castrol multi-vehicle Import ATF in the 5HP24, and my own filter and just paying the 180 labor to have a jag tech do it? Thats what im leaning towards.

Lastly, what filter do i have to get if i buy my own? is there a model number or link you could give me as im sure i can find one on the internet, autozone, or even ebay

thanks so much!

Bought mine at Advance AP. $23 on sale. This really isn't rocket surgery.

Some shops will allow you to bring your parts in, some will not while charging a markup on the parts.

I've pmed you with the info on the indy in PHX. BTW, I buy all of my ZF parts from Eriksson industries.

I think I'll check in with Keyser Soze now and see what he's been up to.

You're welcome!

It was Keyser Soze, Agent Kujan. I mean the Devil himself. How do you shoot the Devil in the back?
