"Transmission Fault" 98 XJ8
Dear Forum Members:
About a year ago we purchased a great metallic/navy blue 98 XJ8. It had about 62K miles. It now has about 76K. Other than brakes and steering pumps aside, it has been a great experience.
On a 60 mile trip away from home, the car suddenly would not go into any drive gears. You can move the gear selector, but nothing happens (unless you put it in reverse). It was just fine before and there was no indication of transmission problems.
But, here we are. Car was told to a local shoppe. There is no known Jag dealer in or near Lakeland, Florida. No speciality shoppes either of which I know. Usually the car is serviced by Suncoast Jag in Clearwater, an independent shoppe.
I know these cars have had some transmission related issues. Any advice as to what this might mean (Transmission Fault) would be greatly appreciated. Obviously, I am certain it is not good news, but if there is something other than a worst case scenario, that would be great.
Also, if it is a worst case scenario, what are the most popular options for repairing/replacing Jag transmissions for this make and model?

Without knowing what caused the fault its kinda hard to give you an answer, it could be any where from the internal harness to a solenoid to the tranny itself.
In case you need a new trans, there if some shops that can rebuild these ZF transmissions you just have to look for them. Let us know what the code(s) is/are so we can help you a little bit more.
