Red face Transmission fault 98 XJR

I have a 1998 jaguar XJR i was driving normally accelerating normally and from about second to third gear it shifted harder than normal kind of a slight clunk, other than that my transmission shifts perfect every other time. After the one hard shift my transmission fault light flashed on and my check engine light came on as well so i went straight to auto zone to run the codes and got a p1111 p0175 p0172. dont know why the check engine light would turn on at the exact second the transmission fault light came on. on the way to auto zone it shifted normally and perfect every time. and before this no check engine lights ever turned on. but about 1 month prior to this my car did the one single hard shift then the transmission fault light came on so i drove it slow to the gas station turned it off waited a bit then turned it back on and the light was gone and it was fine. this time im getting a little more worried hope you can help thank you.

Hi,
Those appear to be engine codes. P0172 "System rich bank 1". P0175 "System rich Bank 2". Not sure about the P1111 DTC although it appears to be a drive cycle completion code. I would suggest you take it to a garage that can scan the transmission computer (they are different) and post the codes you get. It's not unusual for the conductor plates (circuit board) to fail on 722.6 style transmissions causing a failsafe condition. You need to scan the TCM to be sure.

Is the engine running smoothly?

The fluid level is very important -- it needs to be correct. And the electrical connector to the transmission can leak fluid and cause issues.

You need to get the engine codes fixed first.

the engine is running smoothly i have had no problems with the engine, i am getting a slight tick in the motor it almost sounds like a lifter but it is not, i cant pin point where the noise is coming from but its not there once you first start the car but once you get it warmed to temperature the car makes the ticking noise. for the tranny fluid i checked it about a month ago and it seemed fine i will check it again. any ideas what the engine codes could be?

There should be a complete code reference as a pdf in the stickies.

So .........you are saying that it is running fine and shifting fine with no new codes after resetting ?

I would check the fluid in the transmission and make sure the electrical connector to the transmission is not leaking.

Hi fox5mx101,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! The "Stickies" plums refers to include a half dozen threads at the top of the home page of this X308 forum, including the 'HOW TO' quick links thread where links to a lot of helpful documents and how-to threads are collected. It's definitely worth spending time there and copying files to your computer:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...k-links-20090/

Another very helpful resource is JagRepair.com, hosted by our forum member Gus, where you can find lots of Jaguar service documents like the DTC Summaries manual that explains what each Diagnostic Trouble Code means and its possible causes:

Cheers,

Don
