Unhappy Transmission Help????? Too Late to change fluid?

1999 jaguar XJR 112,000 miles.

I have had the vehicle since it had 57 thousand miles.

I have never change the transmission fluid.

I know people say its a "lifetime" tranny, but I dont believe that.

Well after speaking to Jaguar Service manager, She said if you did not change it, then now you can NEVER change it. Or you will do some very bad damage to the transmission.

What should I do? I dont want to risk ruining this transmission

It currently shifts beautifull, the cars engine and transmission are Flawless.

I would hate to cause problems now.

But at the same time I want to give it fresh tranny oil to extend its lifeline

( i plan on keeping this car for a long long time, My dream is to have 300,000+++ miles on it one day)

Talking Trans Fluid

Well, I would change it and the trans filter and the pan gasket. I did on mine, but I have the ZF trans that tends to have longevity issues - let's say. When they say "sealed for life" it means the life of the warranty. After that, you're on your own.

I have not heard of "problems" flushing the trans in an XJR. Maybe if you try and change the fluid type? I plan on doing the same shortly as well, mine has 120K miles and could probably use a flush and filter change. Shifts great and work fine now.

thats weird,

I heard it from two ( suppose to be) reliable sources.

Service Manager of a Jaguar dealership ( you would think they would want to do the service)
recommended to NEVER touch it unless you know it has been done recently, or its too late and it will damage the transmission.

NExt person I heard it from, was a Jaguar Mechanic (private shop that specializes in jaguars)

He said that you will eventually damage the tranny. He reccomended if I really wanted to do it, to change one quart at a time? To prevent damage.

All this different information is driving me crazy

The service manager said something about the new oil being cleaning to aggressively and loosning debri that will eventually prevent it from shifting.

Any technicians want to throw in their two cents? will be appreciated.

I have seen several comments about not flushing the system because it may break deposits loose and cause damage at a later date. Maybe that's what the service manager was talking about. If there is any chance they could end up with a liability suit that would be a good position to take.
As far as changing the fluid and filter goes, I have already begun doing so. I will make three changes this year, and then one a year after until the fluid looks clean.

Sealed for Life is bull crap,

This is from the ZF website,

ZF oils are an important construction component for all ZF transmissions. Optimally adjusted oil change intervals ensure the high shifting comfort and a long service life of your ZF transmission.

Only in the US it is stated, keyword not "RECOMMEND", it is a money maker for auto manufactor, if the transmission crap out from not changing the fluid, either you going to replaced the transmission or buy a new car = $$$$$.

I have change the fluid on a BMW 740iL, so call Seal for Life ZF transmission and it shift better than it ever had since ownership.

BUT, some had did it and required a transmission replacement.

The thing you need to do when changing the tranny fluid is, follow the procedures to the T and make sure you use the CORRECT fluid and FILLED correctly. NOT SHORT CUTS.

I am planning on doing the fluid and filter change on the XJR and my wife Mercedes C43 AMG, which are the same transmission.

AGAIN, Sealed for Life, is BULLCRAP.

I see you are still active on this forum which is awesome. I just had a question regarding this post did you end up flusing your trans and adding new fluid? If so how did it go did the car still preform as expected, and would you recommend doing this to a XJR that has never had a flush at 110,000 miles.

Hi Mathis, You replied to a 2012 thread...
I did not read the 2012 thread, but it looks like you are looking for info reg. ATF change on X308...
I wrote something about that:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-flush-265900/

Yes, change your ATF at 110k miles or way before that.

The 4.0 XJR uses the Mercedes 722.6 gearbox. (W5A580)

Use the correct fluid.(not ESSO 71141)

Mathis, yes. These 722.6s are pretty easy to work on, but intricate and tedious. A "dental pick" style tool comes in handy. I did mine at about 175k miles; pulled the valve body, cleaned it up, put in some upgraded valves and AMG blue top solenoids. I wasn't having any problems when I did this, and it didn't create any problems, just smiles with the blue tops.

Here's all you need to know about the valve body and the dipstick. For the ATF, just replace what came out of the pan. The new stuff will mix with the old, then change it again after a week or two. That can be done as many times as you want to get fresh fluid in there. I used Shell ATF134.

Ups, yes, I did not realize that your question was about a XJR. I do not have that in my collection. So while everything is different - still: DO the ATF change.
