Transmission Issue - 1998 XJR
Hello!
I just picked up a new (to me) XJR a few months ago and have recently noticed a bit of what I believe to be a transmission issue. While driving I notice that the transmission is slipping (not sure if that is the right term, its as if the gear box goes into neutral and the engine revs up in between shifts). If I drive carefully I can stop this from happening completely.
I plan on taking it to a transmission shop in a few days, but I need to replace my alternator first (went out on the drive home last night). I'm just looking for opinions on what it might be and what it'll cost me if any of you have had the same problem.
Edit: Currently has 85k miles on it.
Thanks!

First, this GB rearly really break down seriously, however.
The gearboxes have a tendensy to leak at the wiring harness connection, this giving low level of the oil in GB. Min had this and although no strange behaviour from gearchange, it was low. I do guess that a realy low level would give this behaviour. My strong recomendation is to not drive it until you have checked level. 20 deg gearbox temp should give about 15mm oil level. As there is now dip stick on these gearboxes, one needs to use a wire or equiv. The dip stick pipe is below the middle cover between enigne and coupe. It is plugged but, this is just to remove. Push tab down and than block out.
Good luck!

At the first sign of transmission problems you should have the fluid checked -- stop driving it. If the fluid is low you will damage a slipping transmission.
If the fluid is not low then you have another more serious problem.
The connectors do leak - but this normally causes other issues as the fluid is interfering with the electronics.
The pre 2000 units have the older bearing design
