Default transmission leak

Hello JF,
2 months ago I had discovered that I had a leak somewhere in my transmission.
when i took it to my Jag tech he mention there was only a cup of fluid left... lucky ...I hardly drove the car since its just a toy and didnt manage to do any damage I am very lucky since the transmission was recently rebuilt.

Now my tech could not diagnose where the leak was coming from because of all the nasty gunk that has built up over time..
now my question is where is the leak coming from?
Just yesterday I started receiving the same symptoms I had with the hard shifting from reverse to drive..
that only tells me that once again I am a quart or more short in my gearbox.now before i run this baby dry what replacement part should I be looking into????????
maybe a gasket or o.ring? ....or is it a sleeve that everyone seems to say that is prone to leaking..

JF please help..even though the Tech told before working on the car I need to clean underneath with a power washer and some degreaser to determine where the leak would be coming from.
Now I am asking what could be the culprit in a 1999 xjr for causing the tranny to leak????

Those are jaguar part numbers in the TSB from Bob, so anywhere parts are sold will most likely work...if you're trying to get the best deal, call Dan Wicker at Nalley Jaguar, a forum sponsor. He'll make sure you get the right ones. Get the sleeve and other rings, just in case. They can't be that expensive.

my leak was from the tranny lines rubbing on back of a/c compressor. I found it from where puddle was under it. cut the tube, installed piece of 1/2 inch fuel line double clamped at both ends.

Hypothesis all we like here, do what your tech said and clean the bloody thing, then you'll deffo find the area, and likely cause.
Jack the car up and put stands under the front.
Get underneath with a stiff brush and a bowl of degreaser, and scrub the entire gearbox pan and sides. Use dry paper towels to remove sludge. Maybe use a creeper or carpet to lie on. Once it's clean, run car up to temp with a round the block twice thing.
Then inspect, and post what you find. The process should take half an hour to do, and no guessing....where you got the tranny built, and ask them the likely cause of the leak.

Or, we can suggest things that could go wrong with the gearbox all night long....

While the coin operated car wash folks probably will not appreciate it, a dollar's worth of a pressure wand will probably clean it well enough without all the jacking, climbing and scrubbing.

Point taken TT, I like to get up close and personal without blasting water at the electrical connection to the gearbox TCM, there is a better chance of locating the leak, it'll be obvious if it empties itself.

ok I have an issue .
I had my car sitting for a week due to having a bad alternator.
when I started the car it wouldn't shift into gear ....I mean I can put it into gear BUT NO engine response..is my atf fluid that low that it won't shift out of gear I mean neutral and park work but not drive and reverse?
I did notice a pool of atf fluid on the right rear of the car WHICH i KNOW IS THE SLEEVE NOW. MY ONLY PROBLEM IS i MIGHT HAVE TO GET IT TOWED TO A SHOP TO FIX THIS ISSUE i HOPE ITS NOT A SEIZE TRANNY HOW WOULD YOU KNOW?? TECH DID SAY IT WAS LEAKING BAD LAST TIME HE SAW IT COULD IT BE JUST LOW ATF FLUID?

yes^^^
and for those reading this thread, if your connector is in the front of the trans its easy to replace the sleeve and seals. If your connector is in the rear, you have to drop the pan to slid the white lock down to release the sleeve. FYI

Ok this is what the sleeve looks like wow $99.00 even is what I got it for from the dealership.

just for the Vets here were is the old sleeve leaking from is it the rings that went bad or the actual plastic piece?

Either way I have lost lots of tranny fluid in a matter of 2 months. So anyone reading this do not ignore leaks.

Jimmy have you cleaned it yet? sorry couldn't help it!

The picture shows a tube at the top of the gearbox bell, the banjo and seals may be the culprit, not enough thread-lock at install? dunno but I hope this picture helps.

if you mean cleaned? "yes" the specialist did.

I did notice were the leaking was coming from "bell housing cooler line " is what is written in my invoice .
Is there a fix could someone actually crack the bell housing?Sean they told me it could not be fixed unless I replaced the Transmission...and too bad I have a rebuilt transmission,.thats in great shape.

Thx Sean!

OKAY- i HAVE COME TO TERMS IN REPLACING MY TRANSMISSION .iT STILL SEEMS TO BE LEAKING FROM THE PAN EVEN THOUGH i HAD THE GASKETS REPLACED.
I also notices stress cracks along the bell housing and that is where the leaks are coming from.Like my tech said replace the tranny..and so I am. I found one on Ebay for 600 plus 175 shipping but I have to supply my own tail housing.says its in great condition no cracks very important.

question 1 it said to have came of a 2000 jaguar xjr 79k. what should I be looking for just in case any updates I should take care of before hand..

question 2 I just recently purchased my updated transmission sleeve connector would I be able to transfer it over to the new trans?

question 3 Knowing that every tranny shop out there wants my money what JF may I ask is my best bet aamco or My tech?
also may I ask how many qt of mb fluid Would I need to purchase for this 722.6 ?

I thank you JF but this xjr has been killing me in repairs but at the end she will be perfect.and I will have you guys to thank!

My thoughts are, how did the original get stress cracks? In which case I'd get new cooler lines ordered and fitted.
The 722.6 has 9.3lt capacity. I'd nip to Mercedes dealer and get the correct stuff, along with the fill tube cap. Buying the ATF from Jaguar will set you back double.
Yes to the sleeve.

well on that note the original was cracked due to the previous owner not being extremely careful when installing. Not only that the cooler lines were over torqued. causing the cracks on top of the bell housing.to leak.

where can I find new lines?

I agree Jaguar is way too expensive I went to MB to get fluid for a 722.6 and it cost me only 22.00 a lt and not 53.(big difference in price when you need 10)
