I have swapped AJ26 gearboxes into an AJ27 and 'vice versa'. I have read where a forum member did this and reported having to swap valve bodies or internal harnesses to rectify a gearbox fault indication.
They do have different part numbers but like I stated...... I have done the swap with good results.
If you have both boxes then you have all the parts needed if a fault arises.

That should not be a problem I had mine rebuilt and installed fo5 $2,600. Safer than an unknown junkyard transmission. Get a rebuilt valve body and A drum at a minimum and you will save yourself problems later. Spend a little more and have dependable car.
As long as the newer transmission has a good maintenance history life if good.
